Contrary to common perception, spray drying is a relatively mild drying technique since, firstly, the materials are subjected to heat for only a brief period (typically just a few seconds), and secondly, they are protected from higher bulk temperatures by the cooling effect of the evaporating process. Even with its numerous applications, it wasn't until the beginning of the 21st century that the use of spray drying in pharmaceutical contexts experienced a significant increase.
