According to FutureWise analysis the market for moyamoya disease in 2026 is US$ 1.63 billion, and is expected to reach US$ 3.10 billion by 2036 at a CAGR of 6.64%. Market growth is driven by increasing awareness, improved diagnostic capabilities like MRI and cerebral angiography, and a rising prevalence in specific regions. Enhanced access to specialized neurosurgical interventions and ongoing research into new therapeutic approaches will also contribute to future development in this segment.
Moyamoya Disease is a chronic cerebrovascular disorder characterized by the narrowing of specific blood vessels in the brain, particularly the internal carotid arteries. This narrowing, known as stenosis, leads to restricted blood flow due to thrombosis, or the formation of blood clots. In response to these blockages, the body attempts to develop collateral circulation; however, these newly formed vessels are often weak and prone to further complications, such as bleeding, aneurysm, or additional thrombosis. On angiographic imaging, these collateral vessels have a distinctive appearance resembling a "puff of smoke."
Diagnosis of Moyamoya Disease can occur independently if no other contributing medical conditions are present. Bilateral involvement of both collateral circulation and arterial constriction further supports the diagnosis, whereas unilateral arterial constriction—known as Moyamoya syndrome—can occur in the context of other conditions and may be secondary to a primary disorder. The main risk factor for this syndrome is occlusion of the distal internal carotid artery.
Symptoms of Moyamoya Disease can manifest as strokes, which may lead to paralysis in the arms, legs, and face, as well as language impairments or temporary loss of nerve function. Although it can affect individuals at any age, it is predominantly observed in children aged 5-10 years and adults aged 30-50 years. Treatment options include anticoagulants, antiplatelet medications, and hematologic drugs.
In recent years, awareness of Moyamoya Disease has increased, driven by a growing consciousness about health, which has contributed to market growth for related medical interventions. Research has identified a potential genetic factor linked to the condition, with the RNF213 gene being implicated; however, the pathogenesis of the disease remains unclear after six decades of study.
It is important to note that vascular occlusion may persist even in the face of medical treatment, leading to serious complications, including transient ischemic attacks or multiple strokes that can result in significant functional impairment or even death. In stark contrast to atherosclerosis, which involves fatty deposits and damage to arterial walls, Moyamoya Disease is characterized by abnormal proliferation of the inner layer of the carotid artery, potentially leading to the accumulation of blood clots and increased stroke risk.
FutureWise Market Research has published a report that provides an insightful analysis of Moyamoya Disease Market trends that are affecting the overall market growth.
