Offspinner William Somerville is known for his remarkable performance during New Zealand’s tour of the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi on December 2018. He took seven wickets in the Test cricket match.
Somerville dismissed some of Pakistan's best batsmen and contributed greatly in New Zealand's victory. He has maximised his strengths and skills in the field by producing vital performances.
After their victory in UAE, the team played two home series against visiting teams, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Somerville didn’t receive a call-up to be included in the squad and play against the two touring teams.
"I wasn't expecting to play the home Tests," Somerville said in Galle, ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka. "Ajaz has taken the most wickets in home conditions in New Zealand for the last three domestic seasons. But I was very, very grateful to be a part of that win against Pakistan away, for the first time in 1969."
Despite he was overlooked to be included in the squad for the home series, Somerville didn’t take it personally or felt dismayed. He played the second XI cricket for New South Wales after his Test in UAE but he failed to find a regular spot in the first-class team.
"I didn't even know I was on the radar, for New Zealand," Somerville said. "I assumed it would take one or two seasons. It was a lot faster than I was expecting. But Todd Astle got injured, and I got the call as a replacement for him."
The upcoming Sri Lanka tour is a huge opportunity for him. Somerville is one of the best choices of the team, thus he was included in the squad who will play two Tests matches in Galle and Colombo. He is also excited and honoured if he will be given the chance to play home Tests.
Meanwhile, it was reported that New Zealand won the toss and Kane Williamson was opted to bat for Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka. The two teams are scheduled to play the first Test from August 14 to 18 at Galle International Stadium. You can visit cricket sites to check out the cricket scores for today’s match.
