As people become more and more interested in electric bicycles, we are often asked about legal issues. How does English law deal with electric bicycles? Do you need an electric bicycle license? Do you need insurance? Do you have to wear a helmet? How fast can you drive?
We want to try to answer these and other questions in this article.
In the UK, we follow the same rules as the EU. However, now that we have left the EU, these rules may change at some time in the future. At present, we are still consistent in November 2020. So what are the legal provisions for riding electric bicycles now?
Why do I need a license to ride an electric bike?
In the UK or EU, you don't need a driver's license to ride an electric bicycle. The electric bicycle must be legal, which means it must comply with the regulations we discuss in the next section.
If you have an electric bicycle that does not meet these specifications, you will need to register it in DVLA. See below for more information.
What are the laws and regulations for riding electric bicycles in Britain?
In Britain and Europe, the rules for riding an electric bicycle are as follows: the maximum power of the motorcycle must be 250 watt hours, and only the pedal must assist - the accelerator is allowed only when the speed reaches the walking speed. The engine must stop assisting when the vehicle's speed exceeds 15.5 miles per hour (25 kilometers per hour). Of course, you can ride a bike under your own power as fast as you want.
In addition, you must be at least 14 years old. Helmets are recommended, but not mandatory. You can wear helmets in any place where auxiliary bicycles are not allowed.
What is the law of electric bicycles in Northern Ireland?
This year, Northern Ireland has been in line with the UK and other EU regions. Previously their regulations were different, requiring registration and a complete motorcycle helmet. Happily, the current rules are the same. You can ride your electric bike anywhere in the UK and believe that you have not violated any laws.
In the UK, who regulates laws and makes rules for electric bicycles?
The government decides what the law is. Of course, they have a special abbreviation for electric bicycles - EAPC - which nobody uses. It makes them happy. In any case, the term stands for "electric assisted pedal bicycle".
EAPC has added other UK road vehicle classifications, which are:
Cars: passenger cars with up to 16 seats. Including cars, taxis, minibuses, cars with trailers, etc.
Light truck: light truck. Delivery trucks, commercial vehicles without side shields and two rear wheels, weighing up to 3.5 tons
OGV1: Ordinary trucks over 3.5 tons - large trucks, box trucks, medium trucks with 4 rear wheels, tractors and rollers are interesting
OGV2: Big things of ordinary trucks - articulated vehicles, trucks with 4 or more axles
PSV: Public service vehicle. Buses and long-distance buses of more than 3.5 tons usually have more than 16 seats.
How can I check and prove that I can ride my electric bike without a license in the UK?
Your bike should have a sign or sticker that shows the information required by law, that is, the manufacturer of the output power or motor, the battery voltage, or the maximum speed of the bike.
