Hey !! How is everything? We are here one more day to learn English through our English academies blog. A unique meeting point to exchange with you all the information about your school and, of course, the valuable English lessons that we like so much.

In them, we normally learn English but today we are going to do the opposite: we are going to unlearn. What are you talking about?: S

Don't worry, it's about discovering to ourselves what common mistakes in English we Spaniards usually make. What do you think?

Above all, when it comes to speaking, we tend to fall for language kits. eye! There are also in our own mother tongue. So we will try to discover and correct them.

The common mistakes in English that we will analyze today are the result, most of them, of vices that we acquire without even realizing it. We incorporate them when we begin to take the first steps in learning English and they arise, for example, by thinking in our mother tongue and making associations between both languages.

You may learn  English verbs

You know what 'false friends' are, right?

The Number Method 16  is precisely this fight, we think of Castilian before expressing ourselves in English.

It's never too late and by unlearning you also learn

Pay attention to the 5 common mistakes in English that we propose today. You are in time to correct them!

1. I HAVE A DOUBT

We detect that many students in our classes tell the teacher 'I have a doubt', when they want to say 'I have a question'.

'Doubt', in effect, means 'doubt', but it is never used in the sense of 'not understanding something' but rather 'having a lack of confidence or not believing in something'. You will understand it very well with this example:

I doubt it's going to rain tomorrow. | I doubt it's going to rain tomorrow.

2. AN EURO

This word shows us the importance of phonetics in English and what we always tell you in Number 16: pronouncing correctly is the basis for communicating effectively in another language.

You all know the a / an rule. And if not, we remind you:

A: It is placed before nouns or adjectives that begin with a consonant.

An: It is placed before nouns or adjectives that begin with a vowel.

However, there are exceptions and they have to do with pronunciation. And there are words that, although they begin with a vowel, when pronounced they begin with a consonant. 'Euro' is one of them:

Have you got a euro? | Do you have a euro?

The same is true for  'university', 'unique', 'unicorn', or 'uniform'.

And, pay attention! Because the opposite also happens: words that begin with a written consonant phonetically begin with a vowel. Therefore, they use 'an'. This is the case of 'hour' or 'honest' :

I'll see you in an hour. | See you in an hour.

Jim is an honest man. | Jim is an honest man.

3. DIFFERENTS

Have you ever used the adjective 'different' in the plural?

It is a mistake that we all make because in Spanish we can put adjectives in the plural. But you have to keep in mind that in English adjectives are never plural. Therefore, 'different' does not exist.

There are different types of food. | There are different types of food.

Different: different / different

4. DEPEND OF

Another mistake of associating English with Spanish: we directly translate 'depend on' by 'depend of'. The correct thing is 'depend on'.

Also, 'depend' is a verb, so it will have to be conjugated, right?

It depend s on the weather. | It depends on time.

5. YO ALMUERZO

'Lunch', like 'breakfast' and 'dinner' is a noun. IT IS NOT A VERB. Therefore, it must always be accompanied by 'eat' or 'have'.

My family always have lunch at 13.00. | My family always eats at 1:00 p.m.

And so far our lesson on common mistakes in English that we Spaniards usually make. What do you think?
