Being right isn’t enough: the 4 persuasion types you must appeal to

Let me update you on something I've learned after psych testing professionals using my Persuasion Smart Profile.

Smart people often think that if they're right, they'll get the 'yes' - the approval. The budget. The headcount. The sale.

Actually, the data and real-world experience tells us that being right isn't enough.

Because people don't make decisions based on facts alone. They're influenced by emotion, clarity, confidence, trust, likeability, and that deep human sense of "I feel like you get me."

Here's what my comprehensive research shows: there are four main persuasive styles we tend to use (and respond to):

  1. Wise Owl - Logical, detailed, and cautious
  2. Commanding Eagle - Assertive, direct, results-focused
  3. Friendly Budgie - Warm, inclusive, relationship-driven
  4. Captivating Peacock - Expressive, passionate, story-based

These types shape how people like to be persuaded. The catch is that you don't always know which style your stakeholder is craving at any given time. That's why truly persuasive communicators tailor their message to speak to all four types in every important interaction.

And this is where my 3-step model for persuasive presenting comes in.

Step 1: Analysis - Know who you're talking to

Before you plan your content, analyse your audience through the lens of the four types. Ask yourself:

• Is this person likely to need facts and detail? (Wise Owl)

• Do they value speed, confidence and ROI? (Commanding Eagle)

• Are they focused on trust, inclusion and harmony? (Friendly Budgie)

• Do they light up with stories, enthusiasm and energy? (Captivating Peacock)

Even if you're unsure who's in the room, preparing with all four in mind ensures your message has universal appeal.

Step 2: Design - Structure your message for impact

Now that you understand the audience, it's time to design content that connects with everyone.

• Include logic and data for the Owls.

• Highlight outcomes and action steps for the Eagles.

• Emphasise benefits to people and teams for the Budgies.

• Add stories, analogies, and enthusiasm for the Peacocks.

When your message is designed to speak to all four types, it becomes magnetic.

Step 3: Delivery - Bring it to life with range

In delivery, don't default to your own style. Blend in the styles of the other types:

• Be clear and measured for the Owl.

• Be decisive and confident for the Eagle.

• Be warm and inclusive for the Budgie.

• Be energetic and engaging for the Peacock.

This adaptive delivery is what separates an average presenter from a compelling one.

So, the next time you're thinking, "But I'm right, why don't they get it?" pause and ask yourself: "Have I covered all four types across analysis, design and delivery?"

That's how you win the approval. That's how you build trust. That's how you make it into the high performers club.
