Once you’ve decided what you’ll be fishing for, do some research about local favorite patterns. This includes doing some googling, go to your local fly shop and talk to the employees. Find a couple of simple patterns to start out with.

Head cement - Sally Hansen’s “Hard as Nails” is a good cheap option.
Thread - don’t get sewing thread. Pay for fly tying thread.
Hooks - determined by your patterns
Needle nose pliers - crimp the barbs on your hooks unless you’re fishing saltwater.
