What makes brushless motors superior to brushed motors?

by Mark Liu on Nov 28, 2023 Writing & Speaking 43 Views

The following are the reasons brushless motors are superior to brushed motors:

1. Brushless motors operate more quickly than brushed ones.

Since brushless motors are more efficient than brushed motors, they will operate faster even when their ratings are equal. Because a brushless motor's speed is determined by its speed controller and bearings. A brushless motor can operate at maximum speeds because it produces less heat and friction due to its lack of brushes, whereas the commutator and brushes of a brushed motor restrict the speed of the latter.

2. The efficiency of brushless motors is higher

Brushless motors have an efficiency of over 85% to 90%, while brushed motors have an efficiency of 75% to 80%. Brushless motors make efficient use of the energy supplied because they have minimal mechanical energy losses due to the absence of brushes. Brushless motors are more efficient than brushed motors for this reason.

3. The lifespan of brushless motors is longer

The runtime of brushless motors is more than 10,000 hours. Because brushed motors have brushes and a commutator, which create mechanical and electrical friction between them when they operate, they wear out more quickly than brushless motors. Galvanic corrosion causes wear and tear on motors and brushes over time.

4. When operating, the brushless motor produces less noise.

Because of friction, loose screws, and other factors, motors with more moving parts may produce more mess or noise. Because the friction with the commutator creates both mechanical and electrical noise, brushless motors are quieter than brushed motors. There are no moving parts in brushless motors, so there is no noise or friction to be produced. For this reason, when compared to other motors, brushless motors are quieter.

5. Brushless motors have higher dependability

Compared to brushed motors, brushless motors have a substantially longer service life. Because brushless motors have fewer moving parts, they are less likely to wear out, create noise, lose energy, or experience mechanical or electrical power loss. These are the advantages of having a motor with few moving parts, which also helps the motor last longer and makes it lighter, more compact, smaller, more efficient, etc.

Of course, this does not imply that brushless motors are the only option available. Actually, our needs should determine which motor is best for us.
