Are you the type of person that slathers on lip balm throughout the day, almost as a reflexive habit? The kind who only uses it occasionally, when your lips are cracked into oblivion and close to bleeding? Or the type who avoids it judiciously because you once heard it actually makes chapped lips worse? I am the third, which has led me here today. Is it really true that applying chapstick and other lip balms can cause your lips to become so dependent on those emollients that they “stop moisturizing themselves,” hence starting a vicious cycle of perpetual dryness? The quick answer: Yes, kind of. But it depends. Let’s get into it. Why lips are so susceptible to dryness Lip skin is not robust. As board-certified dermatologist Mary L. Stevenson told NBC News Select, “skin on the lips is much thinner and more sensitive than the skin on your arms and legs because it’s meant to help your mouth absorb food.” Add this to the fact that lips have ... Good strategy has traditionally been seen as the key to business success. More recently, purpose has become an essential element of doing business. But something else is missing: culture, or the essential elements of how an organization and its employees behave, as well as its governing beliefs and principles. And yet, culture often receives less attention than purpose and strategy. The author thinks of purpose, strategy, and culture as a triangle: Each angle connects with and shapes the other two, and if one changes, the other two must evolve and adjust to maintain balance and shape, or the triangle breaks and falls apart. He presents three types of levers companies can use to profoundly shape an effective culture and allow their strategy to come to fruition Early in my career, strategy was seen as the key to business success. More recently, purpose has become an essential element of doing business — the north star and inspiration meant to orient all company activities. ... Continue reading →

As the name suggests, micro habits require minimal motivation and effort to accomplish. Eventually, this little habit will build on top of itself into something bigger and better for you and your goals. It's like when you start running. You may only be able to make it half a mile. But, eventually, you'll be cruising through marathons. Overall, micro habits have the ability to transform every aspect of your life. And that certainly applies to your productivity. Here are 21 mico habits that can be done in about a minute but will boost your productivity by 100% over time. 1. Read 3-pages of a book before bed. You don't want to hit the hay when you're in a bad mood. Or, even worse, after you've filled your brain with garbage like reality TV. Yes, it's understandable that you'd like to decompress before going to bed. However, what you do before bed can affect how well you wake up and how you feel throughout the day. The answer? Read something uplifting and ... Continue reading →

Keeping your yard in good shape during the summer and fall can be enough of a battle against weather and weeds—you don’t also need problems with your lawnmower on top of it. But some lawnmower issues can be avoided entirely—and the life of your lawn mower can be extended—if you carry out a basic maintenance checklist once every season. Remove your lawnmower’s spark plug Step one for any lawnmower maintenance is to remove the spark plug. For electric mowers, unplug it from power, and for battery operated mowers, remove the battery. This is vital for safety because it will keep the mower from starting up during its maintenance. If you plan to keep all of your fingers, this step is key. If you notice the spark plug is worn, you can change it easily yourself. Simply use a wrench to remove the old spark plug and replace it by tightening the new one. Avoid over-tightening—a quarter turn past finger-tight is all you need. Original ... Continue reading →

single people often lament that finding someone to date is hard. According to data from the Pew Research Center, 75 percent of daters say so. And when they fail to find the right person, too many people end up dating the wrong one. Some complain that they are suffering “Groundhog Day Syndrome” in dating: following the same failed pattern, over and over, because the people they are attracted to are not good mates—prospects who, for example, are already in a relationship, have unmanaged addictions, or are abusive. The problem of being attracted to the wrong person is a staple of art and literature. Take Gatsby and Daisy, or Siegmund and Sieglinde in Richard Wagner’s opera Die Walküre. (In the latter, the heroine falls in love with her twin brother, who also happens to be a mortal enemy of her husband’s family—no one surpasses Wagner in twistedness.) In real life, dating the wrong person is rarely this dramatic, even if you do it over and ... Continue reading →

Ever get the feeling that, when you open your social apps, all the faces staring back at you are, well, gorgeous? Maybe that’s because it’s holiday season, festival season and Love Island season all at once. But even outside of that, our feeds look like a sort of eternal Hot Girl Summer. It’s now easier than ever to edit our digital avatars. Apps like FaceTune, Snapchat and TikTok offer subtle face tweaks (you know the ones: slim nose with a shiny button tip, subtle blush, pouty lips), meaning you can rework your look with a single swipe. This, of course, is nothing new. Ever since early magazine imagery and the advent of Photoshop, people have worried about what retouching images would do to us as a society. But now, if social media algorithms are aggressively pushing glossy, symmetrical faces to the front of our feeds, is there a danger of digitally overloading our brains with beauty? The phrase “beauty overstimulation” emerged ... Continue reading →

When Belal Salem visited the Bahariya Oasis for the first time, he felt he was on hallowed ground. Traveling deep into Egypt’s Western Desert to a sprawling valley dotted with guava and mango farms, Salem was retracing the steps taken more than a century earlier by German paleontologist Ernst Stromer, whose team had discovered some of the largest predatory dinosaurs ever found. The experience was overwhelming for Salem, a master’s student in vertebrate paleontology at Mansoura University in the country’s north. “I couldn’t feel my legs,” he says. Though he felt the weight of Stromer’s accomplishments, Salem was determined to make his own contribution to the field. Salem got his chance recently when he and colleagues identified a new dinosaur from Bahariya based on a distinctive single bone. It took two years for the team to free the specimen, found in 2016, from surrounding sedimentary rock and iron. Once exposed, says Salem, the fossil was ... Continue reading →

When Germany’s president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, came to Senegal last February for an economic summit, he took a break from conference rooms in the capital city of Dakar to get his hands dirty, literally, as he learned to make compressed-earth blocks from a mix of iron-rich soil, sand, water, and a bit of cement. His block-making tutorial was part of a groundbreaking event for a cultural institute promoting German-language study. The institute’s new building was designed by the distinguished Burkina Faso–born and Berlin-based architect Francis Kéré, who is renowned worldwide for his graceful structures adapted to their local climates. The building in Dakar is oriented so that nearby trees provide shade, and its thick walls—made of the type of unfired compressed-earth bricks Steinmeier tried his hand at making—insulate the interior from the hot Senegalese climate. A layer of claustras, or perforated walls, wraps around the building like a ... Continue reading →
