Over the last few years, an increasing number of unofficial food holidays have popped up all over the Japanese calendar. Banana Day, Strawberry Day, Curry Day; the list goes on. Each is celebrated with a flurry of online attention and clever marketing tie-ins from restaurants, trade groups, and food companies. But how does a random date become Strawberry Day, for instance? Part of a larger trend known as dajare no hi, or (bad) pun days, most of these celebrations depend on wordplay, to which the Japanese language is particularly well-suited. Take Banana no hi (Banana Day) for example. Broken down, the Japanese pronunciation—ba-na-na—corresponds to the Japanese for eight (ba) and seven (nana). The seventh day of the eighth month, August 7, thus becomes “Banana Day.” Similarly, the Japanese for strawberry—ichigo—corresponds to the number one (ichi) and five (go). Depending on one’s location, Strawberry Day, or ichigo no hi, is marked on either ... Continue reading →

For cancer patients, the best-case scenario after undergoing gruelling radiation and chemotherapy treatments is to be told that they’re in remission, that things look good, but they might not stay that way. When we talk about remission, we leave open the possibility of relapse. We calibrate our expectations with a bit of caution; we might even expect that the cancer will return (even if we hope it might not). What many call ‘cancer culture’ is underpinned by this hope, that cure might be just around the corner. This is why so many of us raise money by running marathons for the cure, saving yogurt tops, and buying consumer products neatly tied up in pink ribbons. In focusing our attention – and a lot of time and money – on this search for a cure, we risk ignoring the social and environmental causes that lead to cancer in the first place. For example: is it better to buy a car from a dealership that donates some of its proceeds to cancer research, or should ... Continue reading →

The education system runs on requiring students to do some extra reading and writing. Reading and writing allow a student to grow their vocabulary, be aware of the English writing services language, and write informatively. While students can be good writers, they get a lot of marks if they adhere to most of the demands. Among the quoted facts is that most lecturers give assignments to gauge students’ writing skills. If you want to show that you have excellent skills, provide unique topics for the assignment. By checking out what other people have written about the topic, you will be able to justify your findings. Moreover, if the information is correct, then your chances of getting a high grade are high. When it comes to academic tasks, everyone has to allocate a portion of their time to work on the paper. Assignments are relatively straightforward, and once the task is done, you are allowed to hand it in. It is expected that a lecturer will take note of ... Continue reading →

Fortunately, we can point to simple techniques that neuroscience suggests work effectively to make people much less anxious--quicker than you think. Here are five of them: 1. Listen to this specially designed song. I'm putting this first because it's my favorite and I'm still shocked at how well it works. A decade ago, British musicians teamed up with sound therapists to record a song called Weightlessness that stimulates specific neurological reactions: lower heart rate, lower blood pressure, and reduced levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. "The song...contains a sustaining rhythm that starts at 60 beats per minute and gradually slows to around 50," explained Lyz Cooper, founder of the British Academy of Sound Therapy. "While listening, your heart rate gradually comes to match that beat." It's just eight minutes long, and it works like a charm. I first tried it several years ago, and I've kept it ... There is a lot of value in empathy at work. Understanding the situations your colleagues are facing can help you to work more effectively with them. Understanding customer and clients can make it easier to provide them the service they want in the way that they want it. There are clear differences between people in how much empathy they bring with them in interactions. Some people naturally take other people’s perspectives and emotions into account when interacting with them. Others are rooted in their own way of thinking about things and can be oblivious to the goals, motivations, and emotions of others. Luckily you can practice being more empathetic—in the workplace, and beyond. If empathy doesn’t come naturally to you—or if you are mentoring someone else who rarely takes other people’s perspectives into consideration—there are some ways to learn to show more empathy and to make a habit of it: Have three questions and a statement in ... 1. Understand what you want You need to understand what you want out of your career before you start looking at job postings. You should know what kind of company you want to work for, what kind of position you want, and what kind of salary you’re willing to accept. If you don’t have any idea about where you want to go, then you might not get anywhere. So take some time to think about what you want and how much money you want to make. 2. Research companies Once you know what you want, research companies that fit those criteria. Look at their websites, read reviews online, and talk to people who already work there. Find out if they offer positions that interest you. 3. Apply After you find a few companies that seem interesting, apply! Don’t just send them your resume; instead, write a cover letter that explains why you would be interested in working for them. Make sure to mention things that you learned while researching the company. Also, make sure to attach your ... Continue reading →

At one point or another, almost everyone has been told to “sit up straight” or “fix your posture,” but is improving your posture really just a matter of consciously thinking about how you’re sitting or standing? Or, are there exercises you can do to improve your posture? We tend to think of “posture” as stagnant position that should be held at all times during the day, but physical therapist June Srisethnil, DPT, OCS, says this isn’t true. “Posture is dynamic, involves the entire body—yes, even your toes—and changes with different positions and activities to promote ideal spine alignment,” she says, adding that the key muscles for posture are the deep stabilizers that run along the spine, primarily the erector spinae. Other muscle groups involved in maintaining ideal posture include the diaphragm, abdominal muscles (rectus abdominis, obliques, and transverse abdominis), and pelvic floor muscles. ... My Chemical Romance is touring again, Paramore and Jimmy Eat World are headlining a major festival this fall, and there’s a skinny, tattooed white dude with a guitar dominating the charts. In case you haven’t heard, emo is back, baby! In honor of its return to prominence—plus the 20th anniversary of the first MCR album—The Ringer is following Emo Wendy’s lead and tapping into that nostalgia. Welcome to Emo Week, where we’ll explore the scene’s roots, its evolution to the modern-day Fifth Wave, and some of the ephemera around the genre. Grab your Telecasters and Manic Panic and join us in the Black Parade. WhyWhy is the word “emo” so hard to define? At first, “emo” was short for “emo-core,” which itself is short for “emotional hardcore.” The term was born in the D.C. music scene, where the band Rites of Spring is credited with introducing a new kind of hardcore that focused on the personal instead ... The COVID-19 pandemic has given us a sneak peek into how working from home changes electricity demand and what that might mean for Americans’ utility bills. The picture it’s painted so far isn’t very pretty, particularly for anyone who’s already struggling to meet their needs. The transition to remote work is changing our energy system in ways that could worsen racial and economic inequities in the US. Working from home shifts energy costs from employers to workers. That burden is bigger for people who live in older, less efficient homes. “I was either freezing in my house in the winter and trying to work from the kitchen or burning in my house in the summer,” Destenie Nock, an assistant professor of engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University, tells The Verge. She lives in a century-old home in Pittsburgh that she says isn’t as well-insulated as newer construction, which became more obvious as she worked from home after the ... Continue reading →
