In 2020, a Korean documentary team invited on its show a mother who had lost her 7-year-old daughter to an incurable disease. The girl’s death was so sudden — she died a week after being diagnosed in 2016 — the mother, Jang Ji-Sun, did not have a chance to say goodbye. For three years she was obsessed with the loss of her daughter.     The producers of the documentary, “Meeting You,” created a digitized re-creation of the child that the mother could see through a virtual reality headset (the TV audience was also able to see the image of the daughter). On the show, the virtual girl, Na-yeon, appeared from behind a woodpile and runs toward her mother, calling, “Mom.” The mother burst into tears and said, “Mom missed you so much, Na-yeon.” A video of the show reportedly received 19 million views. While the experience was painful, the mother told the Korean Times that she would do it again if she could; she finally got a ... Continue reading →

P Peek inside any Indian spice box, and you'll likely find the holy trifecta of spices – turmeric, red chilli powder and ground coriander (often mixed with cumin) – that forms the base of many a curry, lentil or vegetable dish. Though it lacks the striking ochre hue of haldi (turmeric) and isn't associated with any of India's signature red-hot flavours (like chilli powder), coriander (commonly called dhaniya or kothmir in India) is perhaps the most versatile of these spices. Its coarsely ground seeds bring warmth and nuttiness to many dishes, while as a powder, it can be used to thicken curries. As an herb, its fresh stalks and leaves often serve as an aromatic and tangy finishing flavour. It's so customary to Indian cooking that pushcart vendors will cheerfully toss a complimentary bunch of fresh coriander (as well as a handful of green chillies) into customers' bags. Its sheer ubiquity makes it a hero – albeit an unsung one – of ... Continue reading →

Some three million years ago, one of our early hominin ancestors was chowing down on some leaves along a riverbank in what is now Ethiopia. And there it was—440 pounds of fur, with teeth strong enough to crush bone. An otter the size of a large male lion ambled through the dense grasses before bending down to drink from the muddy riverbank. Our ancestor, we figure, crept back into the surrounding woodlands. It doesn’t matter how potentially adorable the giant otter may (or may not) have been, you just don’t want to cross an animal that size. The otter, Enhydriodon omoensis, is the largest ever found. A new study in the French journal Comptes Rendus Palevol is the first to classify the species, naming it after Ethiopia’s Omo River, where its remains were uncovered. While the study calls the otter “lion-sized,” paleontologist Margaret Lewis of Stockton University in New Jersey, who first analyzed some of the fossils in 2008*, thinks ... Continue reading →

True crime has always been complicated, morally speaking. At a minimum, it takes the real stories of victims, their families, and their killers and repackages them as entertainment for the public’s consumption. Should we expect a person impacted by a crime to be okay with having their story trotted out for the general public? Does it matter if they aren’t? What about when the story leans heavily into the old ways of true crime storytelling — tabloidy, sensationalistic, glorifying the serial killer at the expense of his victims? Netflix’s new series Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, created by Ryan Murphy and longtime collaborator Ian Brennan (Glee, The Politician), walks right into these questions with about as much subtlety as Jeffrey Dahmer trying to have a normal social interaction. While the docudrama has topped Netflix’s streaming charts in the five days since its release, it’s also prompted a wave of outrage on social media ... Continue reading →

Princess Elizabeth’s wartime broadcast on BBC Children’s Hour, 13 October 1940 Thousands of you in this country have had to leave your homes and be separated from your fathers and mothers. My sister, Margaret Rose, and I feel so much for you as we know from experience what it means to be away from those we love most of all. All of us children who are still at home think continually of our friends and relations who have gone overseas – who have travelled thousands of miles to find a wartime home and a kindly welcome in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America. My sister and I feel we know quite a lot about these countries. Our father and mother have so often talked to us of their visits to different parts of the world. So it is not difficult for us to picture the sort of life you are all leading, and to think of all the new sights you must be seeing, and the adventures you must be having. We know, every one of us, that ... Continue reading →

I It is not your imagination. And your dishwasher is not about to pack up. Modern dishwashers are pretty effective at drying what's inside them after the end of the cycle, except when it comes to one thing: plastic. Though hand-powered dishwashers have been around since the middle of the 19th Century, the dishwasher's true renaissance came after World War Two, first in commercial kitchens and then the home, alongside the growth of standardised kitchen cupboards and counters. Come the 1970s, they became much more affordable, and much more common. But so did something else: plastic utensils and food storage containers. Ever since, emptying a dishwasher has meant dealing with dripping plastic containers, no matter how hot the temperature of the dishwasher. It is an issue which had confounded dishwasher builders for decades. And good old-fashioned thermodynamics is at least partly to blame. Because most plastic cookware isn't as dense as crockery or metal utensils, it loses ... Continue reading →

During those days it was known as Angular js. What happened was for years developers did face complications while debugging, they were unable to organize code, load java files, dependency injection got completely deteriorated. As a result, web developers were pretty anxious regarding using a framework that resolved all these common yet critical issues at once. And this is how Angular came into existence.     Now since Angular is already a hot potato, I am sure you must have stumbled upon several posts regarding what is the angular framework, how is it beneficial in the long run, what are ... A ndrew Tate, 35, is facing calls for videos of him making misogynistic comments to be removed from TikTok. Tate is no stranger to controversy, having earned infamy for his offensive remarks on social media since his brief stint on Big Brother in 2016–which also ended in scandal. But he has enjoyed unprecedented fame in recent months, as his videos have amassed millions of views—and have caused widespread offence.   The White Ribbon charity, which aims to end male violence against women, has called Tate’s comments “extremely misogynistic” and said they could have “concerning” long-term effects on a young audience. The charity is calling for the videos of Tate–who was previously suspended from Twitter–to be removed from TikTok.   He has also made headlines this week for offering Logan Paul a $5 million Bugatti supercar in response to his fight call-out. But who is Andrew Tate and how did he get famous? Who is Andrew Tate? ... Continue reading →

I remember all too well that day early in the pandemic when we first received the “stay at home” order. My attitude quickly shifted from feeling like I got a “snow day” to feeling like a bird in a cage. Being a person who is both extraverted by nature and not one who enjoys being told what to do, the transition was pretty rough. But you know what? I got used to it. Though the pandemic undoubtedly affected some of your lives more than others, I know it touched every one of us in ways we will never forget. And now, after two years and counting, I am positive that every person reading this is fundamentally different from when the pandemic started. Because that’s how our brains work. They are molded by our experiences so that we can fit into all kinds of different situations—even the decidedly suboptimal ones.   This is actually one of the most human things about all of our brains. In fact, according to some contemporary views of human evolution, ... Continue reading →

JavaScript is one of the most used programming languages around the world. It has become a critical tool in building web apps, mobile apps, and desktop apps. With its rich ecosystem of libraries, frameworks, and tools, it has become very difficult for developers to create scalable applications without it. It’s also an important part of every front-end developer’s toolkit. But JavaScript has several drawbacks, such as its complexity, verbosity, and lack of type safety. And even though JavaScript can be written in a few lines of code, it takes quite some time before you can see any results — especially if you want to create something useful. In this Blog, we will discuss some of the best JavaScript frameworks for development in 2022.     AngularJS Although Google created this javascript framework, the maintenance of AngularJS is still in the hands of the developers’ communit/y including companies and individuals as well. Initially, the purpose ... Continue reading →

When Josefin Stiller was growing up in Berlin, she loved reading about Greek gods in an encyclopedia of mythology. She often lost track of their relationships, however—their feuds, trysts, and betrayals—as she flipped among the entries. Frustrated, she wrote each name on a card and started to arrange children beneath parents on a desk in her bedroom. As lineages became clear, so did family dramas. Sons killed fathers; uncles kidnapped nieces; siblings fell in love. “I wonder if this experience of reconstructing a family tree primed me to appreciate trees and the powerful insights they hold,” Stiller told me in a recent e-mail. Years later, as a graduate student in biology, Stiller worked on an evolutionary tree for seahorses and their relatives, using DNA to understand the ancestry of different species. Then, in 2017, she moved to the University of Copenhagen and joined B10K, a scientific collaboration that aims to sequence the genome of every bird ... Continue reading →

For cancer patients, the best-case scenario after undergoing gruelling radiation and chemotherapy treatments is to be told that they’re in remission, that things look good, but they might not stay that way. When we talk about remission, we leave open the possibility of relapse. We calibrate our expectations with a bit of caution; we might even expect that the cancer will return (even if we hope it might not). What many call ‘cancer culture’ is underpinned by this hope, that cure might be just around the corner. This is why so many of us raise money by running marathons for the cure, saving yogurt tops, and buying consumer products neatly tied up in pink ribbons. In focusing our attention – and a lot of time and money – on this search for a cure, we risk ignoring the social and environmental causes that lead to cancer in the first place. For example: is it better to buy a car from a dealership that donates some of its proceeds to cancer research, or should ... Continue reading →

Travel is transformative, but we also have a duty to leave places we visit better than we find them—and with a better understanding of the destination and the people who call it home. share this article         Editor’s note: Unpacked columns appear in every print issue and monthly online, where they tackle some of travel’s biggest, thorniest questions. I used to travel to destinations solely because I could, not necessarily taking the time to learn about a place I visited. As an American, visas were easy to attain—or not needed at all. I often couldn’t give you a straight answer about why I was there: I’d seen something on Instagram; I was bored; I’d gotten a cheap flight or hotel deal. My travels at the time were based mostly on aesthetics— Instagrammable Airbnbs in Kuala Lumpur overlooking the iconic KL Tower in the skyline, trying to get the perfect angle on top of South Africa’s nearly 3,600-foot ... America’s clean-energy bosses thought they would by now have more to celebrate. In the presidential campaign of 2020 Democrats tried to outbid one another on climate plans—Joe Biden offered $2trn, Bernie Sanders’s Green New Deal was $16trn—as if the nomination would go to the highest bidder. In the three months after Mr Biden defeated Donald Trump, an index of clean-energy firms jumped by about 60%. Goldman Sachs, a bank, forecast “a new era for green infrastructure” in America and beyond. Though Mr Biden’s infrastructure bill offered some help for clean energy, a giant climate bill now seems fantastical. Worse, green power is not just failing to boom. It is going bust. An array of American solar projects have been delayed or cancelled amid a federal probe into tariff evasion by manufacturers of solar panels and modules. The countries in question—Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam—together produce about 80% of America’s ... Continue reading →

MoneyWatch Recycling plastic is a total bust, industry critics say By Irina Ivanova Updated on: May 11, 2022 / 12:08 PM / MoneyWatch         Americans' use of plastic boomed during the pandemic, including mountains of single-use items such as takeout containers, plastic bags and, of course, face masks. At the same time, we're recycling less of this waste than in the past, according to a pair of recent studies. Even before the health crisis, only 5% of plastic made in the U.S. was recycled in 2019 — less than the amount of plastic that was burned that year, scientists with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory wrote in April.  "It is dismally low," said Judith Enck, president of advocacy group Beyond Plastics of the nation's recycling rate. Beyond Plastics and The Last Beach Cleanup recently examined government data from the Environmental Protection Agency and on U.S. exports to come up with a recycling estimate. Their ...
