Popular culture has become increasingly paternal over the past decade. We’re all more than familiar with the “dadbod.” The word zaddy is so pervasive that Merriam-Webster has been made to define it. Our closets are full of sweater vests, oversize pants, and sensible sneakers. 2022 has only solidified what we’ve known to be true for some time: Everyone is dressing like a dad now. Sign up for the One Great Story newsletter The one story you shouldn't miss today, selected by New York's editors. Models like Bella Hadid and influencers like Emma Chamberlain have become dad-fashion icons — father figures, if you will. Olivia Jade, in a sweater vest and bucket hat, dresses more like Danny Tanner than Aunt Becky. Harry Styles’s wide-leg pants and Kendall Jenner’s leather jacket look like items you told your dad to get rid of years ago. A cute winter look book might include loafers, a puffer coat, and a top you ... Continue reading →
Man is an invention of recent date. And one perhaps nearing its end.” With this declaration in The Order of Things (1966), the French philosopher Michel Foucault heralded a new way of thinking that would transform the humanities and social sciences. Foucault’s central idea was that the ways we understand ourselves as human beings aren’t timeless or natural, no matter how much we take them for granted. Rather, the modern concept of “man” was invented in the 18th century, with the emergence of new modes of thinking about biology, society, and language, and eventually it will be replaced in turn. The only constant is the change. And the IT industry keeps changing as it evolves every day. This brings forth far better tools and frameworks to efficiently develop software and websites that provide enhanced user experience. And with the advent of every new technology, the industry is revolutionized. One such technology framework (in reality it’s a library and not a framework) was launched in the year 2013 named ReactJS. This versatile framework not only gained quick popularity because of its versatility but also became a preferred option for developers. This is because there are many benefits of ReactJS. This open-source, component-based javascript framework allows developers to build high-quality UIs for web applications. And as if that’s not it, ReactJS also enables them to place the HTML code inside the javascript. Although this framework is maintained by Facebook, it is also supported by a thriving community of expert developers. Apart from that ... Continue reading →
Last night, I watched Malá Morská Víla (1976), the Czech version of The Little Mermaid. Not because I’m a cinephile (the only filmography I’m well versed with belongs to Govinda and Shah Rukh Khan), but because I saw a tweet about the gorgeous ~aesthetics~ of this movie (and partly because I’m unemployed.) The OP was absolutely right—the movie was fascinating. The actors playing mermaids did not have fishtails, nor were they clad in shell-shaped bikinis. The budget of the entire film was probably less than the money spent on Ariel’s hair colouring in the upcoming adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Most importantly, the source material was close to what Hans Christian Andersen envisioned, not the sanitised version Disney wants us to watch. The most striking thing about it was undoubtedly the fashion. The colours, the outfits, the hair—oh my god, the hair was spectacular. This movie probably invented that ‘seapunk ... Continue reading →
What is the difference between a painting and a photograph? The artist’s role as the creator of a painting is usually obvious. Even the most casual viewer recognizes the artist’s signature or the choices that must be made when putting paint on canvas. In contrast, many assume that photographs have an unshakeable veracity, that they capture the world exactly as it is. Yet, just as anyone who recognizes themselves in a family photograph can attest, photographs obscure or leave out just as much reality as they contain. As Alan Trachtenberg notes, “They are, we learn, vulnerable to exactly the same obscurities of other forms of evidence.” The Medium Has a Message Visual works, no matter what form they take, are subject to both the limitations and possibilities of their medium. Medium refers to what material a visual work is made of: the vehicle for an idea. This could refer to a general form, like sculpture or drawing, or a specific material, like marble or ... Introduction You can find numerous JavaScript frameworks available for server-side and client-side rendering, but choosing a reliable framework that well suits your project requirements is a challenging task be it a website, JavaScript system, or single-page application. Selecting the platform that doesn’t suit your requirements might negatively affect your project’s resilience and ability to meet deadlines. JavaScript developers are always confused while choosing a framework between React and Angular. So if you’re also one of those developers then you’re not alone. Enterprises have already realized that expanding business and developing mobile and web applications using the capabilities of the Angular framework will help them to deliver an amazing user experience, enhance productivity, and ease of access. So, currently, the Angular framework is one of the best front-end platforms with MVVM architecture to develop interactive apps that possess modular ... Continue reading →
I cradled my first iPhone like an egg after I bought it. The year was 2011; the season was winter. The ground was slushy, but I was too nervous to take the thing on the subway. It was an absolute luxury, by far the fanciest and, I felt, most fragile thing I owned—more Fabergé than farmstand. The precise model was the iPhone 4, which looked like an ice-cream sandwich from the side and felt about as sturdy. I wasn’t just concerned about slipping and dropping the thing: It was dark, I was in a crusty part of New York, and I looked like I got scared at Death Cab for Cutie shows—would someone punch me in the face and yank it? The iPhone was relatively uncommon back then; BlackBerry—the traditionalist’s choice—was still more popular, but both were outnumbered by Android. Nokia was trouncing them all. Most Americans didn’t have a smartphone, and many had no mobile phone at all. In a market generally defined by boring hunks of plastic, ... Continue reading →
In 1869, the Baptist fundamentalist Cyrus Reed Teed reported his divine revelation that the Earth was hollow. At first glance, nothing novel. Jules Verne had explored a similar concept five years prior in his science-fiction adventure Journey to the Centre of the Earth. But while Verne imagined a subterranean cavern of fantastic creatures, Teed declared in earnest that we were literally living inside the sphere. In this strange cosmology, the Sun, planets, stars and galaxies all occupy the Earth’s interior. The Earth’s crust is an infinitely thick layer of rock encasing the entire Universe. Motivated by his new cosmology, Teed published a book, started a new religion, amassed disciples, and founded a new town in Florida. To many, Teed’s ideas sound like snake oil so thick only the most gullible could imbibe. Yet his influence was not limited to the United States, nor to the 19th century. Anti-intellectual sentiment within the Nazi party embraced concave hollow-Earth ... Continue reading →

After more than 60 years in the business, the comedy legend was ready to wind it down. Then came 'Only Murders in the Building' and his three Emmy nominations. And a new stage show. And a new book. And a new doc. But after that, it's over. He's pretty sure… Steve Martin keeps telling himself to stop fiddling with the same material, but he can’t help it. This lifelong impulse made a recent appearance a few stops into his latest tour with Martin Short, You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today! One joke was earning two perfectly adequate laughs from the crowd, but he craved a bigger reaction. As the show’s title suggests, the longtime friends and entertainment warhorses devote a portion of each night to ribbing each other over images from their past. Short, a little soft around the edges in his youth, is subjected to one shirtless photo during the slideshow. For a while, Martin hammered the chubby jokes. “I’d say, ‘Now, ... Continue reading →
New Yorker writer Alec Wilkinson struggled with maths at school, finding inspiration in literature instead. But aged 65, in the hope of unlocking a new part of his brain, he decided to put the limits of his intelligence to the test Alec Wilkinson Sun 7 Aug 2022 13.00 BSTLast modified on Mon 8 Aug 2022 17.10 BST 689 I don’t see how it can harm me now to reveal that I only passed math in high school because I cheated. I could add and subtract and multiply and divide, but I entered the wilderness when words became equations. On test days I sat beside smart boys and girls whose handwriting I could read and divided my attention between his or her desk and the teacher’s eyes. To pass Algebra II, I copied a term paper and nearly got caught. By then I was going to a boys’ school, and it gives me pause to think that I might have been kicked out and had to begin a different life, knowing different people, having different experiences, and eventually erasing the person I ... JavaScript is a well-known single-threaded technology, but it may limit the use of the modern architecture of Node.js. When it comes to multiple threads, there comes some complexity and this is because of the inherent complexity. Therefore, managing context switching and spinning up new threads becomes expensive. And it also requires a lot of work from both the programmers and the operating system to deliver a solution. Besides, Node.js offers various other functionalities and security aspects. This is the reason why the event loop is used with Node.js. To more about this concept, let us go through this blog, and learn how everything in the Node.js event loop works and how it helps in solving various problems. What is Event Loop Utilization? The event loop is a very simple non-blocking, single-threaded, and asynchronously concurrent. When you request anything on a web page, it lookups in the database. A single thread has the capability to do one thing at ... Continue reading →
At one point or another, almost everyone has been told to “sit up straight” or “fix your posture,” but is improving your posture really just a matter of consciously thinking about how you’re sitting or standing? Or, are there exercises you can do to improve your posture? We tend to think of “posture” as stagnant position that should be held at all times during the day, but physical therapist June Srisethnil, DPT, OCS, says this isn’t true. “Posture is dynamic, involves the entire body—yes, even your toes—and changes with different positions and activities to promote ideal spine alignment,” she says, adding that the key muscles for posture are the deep stabilizers that run along the spine, primarily the erector spinae. Other muscle groups involved in maintaining ideal posture include the diaphragm, abdominal muscles (rectus abdominis, obliques, and transverse abdominis), and pelvic floor muscles. ... Alice Wong: I’ve been thinking a lot about the titles of your books, An Immense World and I Contain Multitudes, because I think most humans don’t really realize how interdependent we are to other organisms. Bacteria, fungi, viruses, bugs—there is still this binary thinking of these organisms as good or bad, as clean or dirty, which really obscures the reality. So I was wondering, how do you view your body’s relationship with the natural world, especially in the midst of this pandemic? Ed Yong: I Contain Multitudes and An Immense World feel to me like connected books. Like part one and two of a series, with the main underlying theme being that the world is richer and weirder and wider than we understand. The first book explored that idea through the microbiome. It showed that our cells and our bodies are home to all these audiences we can’t see and that profoundly influence our lives, our minds, our health. An Immense World argues that the world around us ... Continue reading →
Vue.js is a progressive JavaScript framework that supports modern web development. It is one of the most talked-about JavaScript frameworks out there and has been gaining a lot of popularity over the past few years. What makes Vue.JS an excellent option is that it is one of the most powerful frameworks that also happens to offer a wide range of Vue component libraries. Similarly in this article, we will discuss in-depth the reasons that make Vue.JS the most suitable framework for web development. There are as mentioned below: High-level components Vue has many built-in components, such as dialogs, modals, and custom components. These can be used to create a variety of applications with little code. Simplicity Vue.js is simple to learn and implement, and the learning curve is short. It's not just a matter of following a few steps; you can start writing your app in no time at all. Of course, some features are more advanced than those of other frameworks. But by learning ... Every icon has waves of fame, and right now we are riding a new swell of fascination and misunderstanding of Marilyn Monroe, nearly sixty years after her tragic death. People were furious when Kim Kardashian wore a Monroe dress to the Met Gala , the sequined gown Monroe is famed for wearing during her “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” serenade to President John F. Kennedy (she actually wore two of Monroe’s dresses that night). Then an Andy Warhol portrait of Monroe broke a record this week when gallery owner Larry Gagosian purchased the 1964 silk screen for a bombastic $195 million, the most paid for a work by an American artist. It beat out the price paid five years ago for a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, another icon draped in the myth of a talent gone far too soon. It is not shocking that someone as powerful as Gagosian made a point of buying a Warhol, upping the overall auction value for his pieces, and it’s certainly not shocking that it was Andy’s ... There’s a downside to “till death us do part” – it does. For example, 60s model Jan de Souza, co-host of Tramp nightclub with her husband Johnny Gold, died recently: of loneliness, her obituary said. He’d died a year earlier, after 50 years of marriage. It recalls the perfect little poem by Henry Wotton, Upon the Death of Sir Albert Morton’s Wife: He first deceased; she for a little tried To live without him, liked it not, and died. Is it romantic? Or is it shocking that a widow might die of loneliness? It has been known for decades by science (and for aeons by art) that loneliness is bad for our health: as damaging as 15 cigarettes a day, or alcoholism. Lonely people are 50% more likely to die prematurely than those with good relationships. Stress affects you more with no one to help you; financial and health problems are yours alone, and everyday obstacles take a bigger emotional toll. It reduces your immunity, and increases inflammation, ... Continue reading →
VueJs is a well-known term when it comes to web applications. Nowadays, it is one of the most emerging front-end technologies that is discussed in connection with ReactJs and Angular. VueJs is basically an open-source JavaScript library that supports files with compact sizes. It works as a combination of the two best technologies React and Angular and this is why it is considered the best option when it comes to creating user interfaces and rendering them. VueJs even enables the developers to control HTML that is already rendered by the server. In this blog, we will learn more about VueJs and have a look at its advantages which attracts front-end developers towards it. What is VueJS? VueJs is an open-source Javascript framework by Evan You. It is a progressive JS framework that enables developers to build single-page applications and user interfaces (UIs). This is a framework that uses a high level of decoupling which enables the developers to create web interfaces. ... Continue reading →
New Delhi: Tharavamat Nanda Kumar vividly remembers the day, some 16 years ago, when he visited the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). A few days before the visit, Kumar, then the additional chief secretary of Jharkhand, had received an SOS call to report to Delhi and take over as secretary of food and public distribution. The country was going through a wheat crisis. Signs of a shortage were evident. Public stocks were dwindling. The government, headed by Manmohan Singh at the time, had already decided to import wheat. When Kumar, then 56, went for a briefing at the PMO, he was advised by an official: “Do not rely solely on the wheat production estimates from the agriculture ministry. Talk to traders, look for price signals from domestic and international markets, do your own homework and research before making a decision.” Kumar followed the advice diligently. But the ministry he once served seems to have failed to learn from its series of missteps between 2003 and ... Continue reading →
