I didn't expect Mafia's driving and combat to remain timeless, and they were never the parts I appreciated most about the game anyway. It was the period detail and the story that had such an impact on my younger self. This, to me, is how organised crime should be portrayed: a seemingly exciting escape from a mundane life for Tommy Angelo that ultimately eats away at him, and that cannot itself be escaped. Mafia borrows liberally from Goodfellas and The Godfather in telling this story, but it deserves to be credited as one of gaming's first great period pieces.
Denby Grace, the game's senior producer, said the three dropped endings were just "OK," so don't lament their passing (Not the face, Tony. Not the face!) "We had four multiple endings at one point in the game, and then we looked at it and we had one really outstanding great ending to end our story," Grace told IncGamers. "We worked on these things and we have our players that focus test [the game] and we found that people were just replaying and ultimately only felt satisfied when they got to the one great ending."

If you've got the mysteriously pulled Steam version, or patched the original to v1.2, the difficulty of this racing sequence has been solved, but imperfectly. You can adjust it so the usually aggressive drivers politely move aside and slow down if there's any threat of you not winning, and you can turn off the sensitive damage. Now it's too easy. In 2002 I felt like the developers had suddenly turned on me.

It’s therefore refreshing to hear how Mafia City will allow for some flux in its open world. The buildings can’t be knocked down. It’s nothing like that. And it’s still going to be a largely story-driven game that sees its protagonist Lincoln Clay tangle with the mafia of New Bordeaux. Mafia City will, however, also let players tinker with the organized crime structure of that city and make choices that influence the options available to them in the city and the relationships they have with some key characters, who can even flip from being allies to enemies if the player pushes them.

2) This is, essentially, a late-1960s, New Orleans-based GTA. It is set in 1968 and the city is pulsing with energy. Live music emanates from clubs as Clay walks past them, there are cops on the street hassling an interracial couple, people in colourful flares hang out in a graveyard smoking pot and fondling each other. The music is all era-appropriate (though I’m guessing there will be some leniency with the exact year, as I’m pretty sure that one of the songs I heard was recorded in the early 1970s). Ambience-wise, this is very impressive - this is a different kind of American city to explore as a game world, away from the modern high-rise grids that we’re usually taken to.
