Now, it is 2018 and a graphically enhanced version of Mafia City, under the woefully bad “Re-Mars-Tered” moniker, has been released into a far different sociopolitical landscape. The White House cabinet is run by a fascistic regime, racism is rewarded rather than quelled, and ICE agents are separating families at the U.S. border as I type this. The horror doesn’t end there—it didn’t even start there, and I could go on and on. Guerilla’s chaos and violence are no longer just fun, but they feel prescient—necessary, even. Building a revolution and enacting political and physical violence against a totalitarian regime and their defense force feels scarily relevant. Given the world that this remaster has been released into, its core themes resonate at a higher decibel—they’re nearly cacophonous. One of great things about the game is that you are assigned a mentor. A mentor is a real player who is there to lend a hand, answer questions, and give you guidance. I find this game a bit more complicated because there is so many people playing and so much going on in the game. The mentor for me has been tremendous. The online guide is also a big help. Successfully taking a Hideout let you take the Racket Boss' vehicle.   I didn't expect Mafia's driving and combat to remain timeless, and they were never the parts I appreciated most about the game anyway. It was the period detail and the story that had such an impact on my younger self. This, to me, is how organised crime should be portrayed: a seemingly exciting escape from a mundane life for Tommy Angelo that ultimately eats away at him, and that cannot itself be escaped. Mafia borrows liberally from Goodfellas and The Godfather in telling this story, but it deserves to be credited as one of gaming's first great period pieces. If you commit crimes such as brandishing weapons, assault, murder, or even speeding when cops are around, City Gangster Games, you’ll soon find yourself in trouble. Citizens don’t take to kindly to violent maniacs, and with racial tension at a palpable high in this 1960’s American city, nobody will be quick to forgive Lincoln. While you can get away with a bit of lawlessness, make sure that you’re keeping your eyes out for your surroundings. If there are too many eyes in the vicinity, either use stealth or wait. See a blue marker on your mini-map, hold off on any action so that cops won’t get wise to your plans.
