The primary international standard for intelligent energy metering, control, and management is DLMS/COSEM (also known as IEC 62056). It contains standards for object-oriented data models, application layer protocols, and media-specific communication profiles. The DLMS/COSEM smart metering protocol can be used for various utilities including gas, water, and heat, and is not just for electricity metering.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has incorporated the standards set, which was created and maintained by the DLMS User Association (DLMS UA), into the IEC 62056 series.
There are three primary components to the DLMS/COSEM:
-
COSEM (Companion Specification for Energy Metering) - This specification, which can be applied to a wide range of applications, provides the general object model.
-
OBIS (Object Identification System) - This is the object naming system.
-
DLMS (Device Language Message Specification) - This application layer protocol is utilized to convert the data into messages.
COMPANION SPECIFICATION FOR ENERGY METERING (COSEM)
An illustration of the capabilities accessible through the communication interface is provided by the COSEM interface model for communicating energy metering equipment. It offers semantics for applications using metering. The COSEM model employs an object-oriented methodology. A COSEM interface object is a specific instance of a COSEM interface class. The collection of objects created in a physical device's logical devices serves as a model for how the metering equipment functions as observed through its communication interfaces. The COSEM paradigm describes the metre as a server utilized by client programmes that, through regulated access to the characteristics and particular methods of objects making up the server interface, get statistics from, provide control information to, and initiate known actions within the metre. The client may be assisting utilities, customers, metre operators, or metre makers with their business processes.
OBJECT IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (OBIS)
The naming scheme for COSEM objects is called OBIS. Electricity, gas, water, heat cost allocators (HCAs), thermal energy metering, as well as abstract data unrelated to the type of energy measured, are all covered by the OBIS rules. The OBIS' hierarchical structure enables the data's attributes, such as electrical energy, active power, integration, tariff, and billing period, to be categorized.
DEVICE LANGUAGE MESSAGE SPECIFICATION (DLMS)
The DLMS services define the syntax of the language. The Head End Systems or concentrators are the clients in the client-server model used by DLMS/COSEM, and the end devices, typically metres, are the servers.
The DLMS/COSEM application layer offers the following:
-
The xDLMS services access the data stored by the COSEM objects.
-
The ACSE services link clients and servers.
Each object receives the same xDLMS services, allowing for the addition of new objects to the model without disrupting the application layer.
The application layer also handles message construction (APDUs, or Application Protocol Data Units), cryptographic protection application, verification, and removal as needed, and block transfers of lengthy messages.
DLMS DATA EXCHANGE PROTOCOL
In accordance with IS 15959, the DLMS data exchange protocol is chosen for smart metres in order to meet the application layer's special needs. This promotes metre interoperability among various metre brands. The goal of DLMS protocol testing is to make sure the protocol is implemented in the metre and that data from different object identification systems (OBIS) is accurate and up to par. The smart metre data sharing protocol must adhere to IS 15959.
ASE DLMS METRE SIMULATOR
The utility can examine HES/MDMS using the ASE DLMS metre simulator during the vendor selection or integration stage of their AMI project, find problems before complete metre deployment, and compare the effectiveness of various HES/MDMS systems. There are several smart metering use scenarios that can be simulated to help end users make decisions that would be difficult or impossible with operational metres. Simulators can be used by HES/MDMS developers for internal validation and performance benchmarking, as well as for showcasing the capabilities and scalability of their HES/MDMS.
In order to verify, troubleshoot, and collect data, users can interface with DLMS COSEM servers (metre/gateway/data concentrator) via the windows-based DLMS COSEM Protocol Simulator, the ASE DLMS Test Set. A variety of communication channels, including serial, optical, ethernet, and modems, are supported by the ASEDLMS DLMS COSEM protocol test suite, which complies with the most recent DLMS-UA coloring books.
