The focus is on the safety and impact on human health of this compound. Please watch NBC News. On February 10, 2014, Senator Charles Schumer proposed a ban on its use in food. Azodicarbonamide is also used as a foaming agent in the rubber and plastic industries. This compound is used for the expansion of various polymers, including polyvinyl chloride, polyolefin, natural rubber, and synthetic rubber.
Is this compound allowed for use in food?
The Food and Drug Administration's guidelines on company food and health safety allow the use of azodicarbonamide. Due to the FDA's recognition of this compound as GRAS ("Generally Recognized Safety"), any company can use it in food without reporting its use. In the United States, azodicarbonamide is allowed to be added to flour, with a maximum content of up to 45 ppm. US Federal Regulations (21CFR172.806). Are there any health issues with azodicarbonamide
In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive has determined that azodicarbonamide is a respiratory sensitizer in the workplace environment that may cause asthma, and has determined that its containers should be labeled as' inhalation may cause sensitization '. The World Health Organization has linked azodicarbonamide to "respiratory problems, allergies, and asthma" of individuals working in workplaces where azodicarbonamide is produced or processed in its original form. The available data is limited to these occupational environments. Due to the lack of existing data, it is not possible to assess the general public's exposure to azodicarbonamide.
The World Health Organization stated that, There is no data available to determine the exposure of the general population. In terms of kinetics and metabolism, limited animal studies through inhalation and ingestion exposure have shown that a large amount is not absorbed and rapidly eliminated in feces. The study further indicates that most systems are exposed to the decomposition product biurea, rather than the parent compound. Toxicity studies conducted in experimental mammals have shown low acute toxicity and no irritation to the skin, eyes, or respiratory tract Exciting. Although azodicarbonamide was found to be a mutagen in the bacterial system, the report found no evidence that this effect would occur in vivo. There are not enough studies on carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity in animals or humans. Case reports and human epidemiological studies provide extensive evidence that azodicarboxylamide can induce asthma, other respiratory symptoms, and skin sensitization in exposed workers. The adverse effects on other systems have not been studied yet.
