How should Sertraline be taken?
Sertraline contains the active ingredient sertraline. Sertraline is an SSRI, a type of medication used to treat depression and anxiety.
Sertraline is used to treat:
- Depression and the prevention of its recurrence in adults.
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects adults, children, and adolescents aged 6-17 years.
Depression is characterized by symptoms such as sadness, difficulty sleeping, and reduced enjoyment of life.
OCD is an anxiety-related illness characterized by persistent thoughts, obsessions, and compulsions.
Things to consider before taking sertraline
Do not take Sertraline:
- If you have an allergy to sertraline or any of the medication's other ingredients
- If you currently take or have previously taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), which include selegiline and moclobemide, or drugs that are similar to MAOIs (like linezolid). You have to wait at least a week after stopping sertraline treatment before beginning an MAOI.
- If you are currently taking Pimozide, an antipsychotic medication.
Other medicines and Sertraline:
Inform your doctor or pharmacist about any medications you are currently taking, have recently taken, or may take in the future, including over-the-counter medications.
Certain medications may interfere with Sertraline's ability to function or may lessen the potency of other medications taken concurrently with Sertraline 50 mg.
Sertraline 50 mg with food, drink, and alcohol:
You can take sertraline tablets with or without meals.
It is not advised to consume grapefruit juice while taking sertraline 50 mg.
It is recommended that you avoid using this medication with alcohol.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility:
Before taking this medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently pregnant, nursing a baby, suspect you may be pregnant, or intend to become pregnant.
How to take Sertraline 50 mg
Always take this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician or pharmacist. If you are unsure, ask your pharmacist or doctor.
You can take sertraline 50 mg tablets with or without meals.
Once a day, take your medication in the morning or evening.
If you are unsure, you should speak with your physician or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is:
- Adults:
Depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder:
The typical effective dose for OCD and depression is 50 mg/day. Over several weeks, the daily dosage may be raised in increments of 50 mg and at intervals of at least one week. It is advised to take no more than 200 mg per day.
- Use in children and adolescents:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder:
Children aged 6 to 12: A starting dose of 25 mg per day is advised.
Your doctor may decide to increase this to 50 mg per day after a week.
A daily dose of 200 mg is the maximum.
For adolescents aged 13 to 17:A starting dose of 50 mg per day is advised.
A daily dose of 200 mg is the maximum.
If you forget to take Sertraline:
Do not take the dose that you missed if you forget to take it. Simply take the subsequent dosage as scheduled. Never take two doses to make up for something you forgot to take.
If you stop taking Sertraline:
Until your doctor instructs you otherwise, don't stop taking sertraline 50 mg. Before you eventually stop taking sertraline, your doctor will want to gradually lower your dosage over a few weeks. There could be negative effects if you abruptly stop taking this medication.
