Understanding Root Canal Treatment: What Is It and Why Is It Necessary

Have you ever experienced a sudden toothache during a dental procedure like a root canal treatment? Don't worry—you're not alone! Many people in India avoid essential dental procedures, including root canals, due to misconceptions about pain, cost, etc.

However, most people don't fully understand root canal treatment. This blog discusses the process, cause, symptoms, and why it is necessary. Let's take a look!

What is a Root Canal?

To understand it better, consider the structure of a tooth. A tooth consists of roots and a crown. The roots are below the gums, and the crown is above it. The roots join the tooth and the jawbone.

The pulp, the hollow portion of a tooth, contains blood vessels, arteries, nerve tissue, and other cells. It provides nutrients and moisture to the tooth.

Dental treatment, i.e., RCT, is commonly known as endodontic (inside the tooth) therapy. It refers to the interior of the teeth.

When is a Root Canal Needed?

RCT is essential when the pulp, the soft inner portion of a tooth, gets damaged or infected. When a tooth is deeply chipped, cracked, or has a deep cavity, the pulp becomes home to bacteria. If left untreated, dental injuries can also cause severe inflammation and damage to the pulp.

Even in cases where the pulp is dead, the crown (the portion visible above your gums) may hold together and stay intact. Hence, it is important to immediately remove any damaged, injured, or infected pulp to maintain the tooth's structure.

Causes of Pulp Damage

Let us take a look at some of the most common causes of pulp damage:

  • Chip/crack in the tooth
  • Untreated cavity and deep decay
  • Tooth injury
  • Multiple dental treatments in the same tooth.

Symptoms of Pulp Damage

Watch out for these signs and symptoms:

  • Pain in the tooth
  • Gum swelling
  • Temperature (heat/cold) Sensitivity
  • Swelling around neck and face
  • Hole in the tooth

Process:

How is a Root Canal Performed?

An RCT treatment is performed in a dental clinic. Your dentist will evaluate the impacted tooth and perform an X-ray to confirm the diagnosis. If the reports indicate pulp damage, your dentist will recommend you see an expert endodontist to get the root canal treatment. The procedure generally takes place in four steps. Smile Gallery offers promising solutions for your dental needs. Book an appointment for root canal treatment in Bhopal and experience the latest technology in dental care. At Smile Gallery, we help you achieve a perfect smile and boost your confidence in life.

Step 1: Anaesthetic

The dentist will apply numbing medicine to the gums around the infected tooth. Once the numbing medicine takes effect, the gums will be injected with a local anesthetic. You may feel a pinching or burning sensation, which will quickly pass.

During an RCT treatment, you will not be put to sleep. You will be awake throughout the process, but the anesthetic makes sure that you feel no pain.

Step 2: Removing the Pulp

Once the tooth is numb, the endodontist will make a small opening in its apex. The dentist will use special tools known as 'files' to delicately remove the infected or damaged pulp. Further, the endodontist will take extra care to clean all the canals in your tooth thoroughly.

Step 3: Antibiotics/Medications

Once the pulp has been separated, the dentist will apply a topical antibiotic to the affected area to eliminate the chances of reinfection. After cleaning the canals, the dentist will fill and seal your tooth using gutta-percha (a rubber-like substance) and a sealer paste. Depending on the tooth's condition, they may also prescribe oral antibiotics.

Step 4: Temporary Filling

Here, the dentist will use a soft, temporary substance to seal the tiny opening at the top of your tooth to complete the root canal treatment. This sealant will help prevent the canals from being damaged/affected by saliva.

Step 5: Root Capping

Dentists recommend placing a cap/crown on top within one week of the root canal treatment so that the original tooth remains intact. This protects the teeth from further damage.

Why are root canals necessary?

Root canals are a simple procedure, always recommended to save damaged, natural teeth and prevent the need for dental bridges and implants. They are essential when the pulp, or soft tissue, inside the tooth becomes inflamed or infected, which could lead to an abscess.

The tooth pulp contains connective tissue, nerves, and blood vessels, which create hard tissues around the tooth during growth and development.

However, a fully matured tooth is nourished by its surrounding tissues and no longer needs the pulp to survive. All of these nerves are the "root" of the tooth, and the canal travels from the tip of the root to the pulp chamber. When this sensitive area becomes infected, it can cause severe pain, which is often treated immediately.

There are several reasons why a root canal may be necessary:

  • Faulty crown
  • Large fillings
  • Deep decay
  • Cracked or chipped tooth
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth

Advantages of a root canal

Here are the following benefits of a root canal, and then be sure to discuss it with one of your dental professionals:

  • Prevents the spread of infection
  • Prevents the formation of abscesses in the tooth
  • Reduce pain from infection and inflammation
  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • Quick procedure
  • There was little to no pain during the procedure

There are various misconceptions about root canals, one of which is that the treatment is very painful. The dentist's goal during the procedure is not to cause pain but to save your tooth and improve your dental health. Thanks to modern technology and techniques, root canals have become relatively comfortable and effective treatments.

A root canal treatment helps maintain your natural smile, relieves pain from chewing so you can continue to enjoy your favorite foods, and reduces the need for ongoing dental work.
