Binding procedure is the first step that you just need to do after you are building your drone or you received a bnf (bind and fly) drone that is specially done for only bind and configure..
This procedure between the rc transmitter and rc receiver is for start controlling the drone. Now I’m going to show you how to connect your rc transmitter and rc receiver with frsky binding.
When you have received a new receiver , you first have to bind it to the radio, so they can exchange information to each other. You only have to do it one time and you only have to do it again if you’ve updated the firmware.
The same procedure should apply to most Frsky rc transmitter and rc receiver, including:
Receivers: R-XSR, XSR, X4R-SB, XM+, X8R and more
Radios: Taranis X9D. QX7, X-lite and Horus X10s and more
Binding R9 series receivers (such as the R9MM) to the R9m is also the same, you just need to use the bind option under “External Module”.
1.Powering Receiver.
First of all the receiver has to be powered on during binding, you can choose between wire the receiver to your flight controller, this is the easiest way to do and If you don't want to wire the receiver for do the frsky binding you can also power your receiver with a 5V power source.
All you need for binding are the 5V and ground wires, the signal wire it’s not necessary for binding.
2.Binding Frsky RX to TX.
Now you have to turn on your Taranis radio, then go to the “Model Setup” page by pressing the Menu button once and Scroll down until you find “Internal Module”, select D16 mode for any X-series receivers which are included R-XSR, X4R-SB, XSR, XM+, XM and X8R and for the D-series receivers how the D4R-II receiver, you need to select D8 mode, now for start the frsky binding Pressing [Bind], and you shall be prompted 4 options. Just you have to choose the option that is perfect for your frsky receiver. Your Taranis is going to start making an intermittent chirping sound, this is indicating that now is in bind mode.
All the Frsky receivers has a physical bind button on it. It’s sometimes named “F/S”, because sometimes is used to set receiver failsafe as well.
Hold down the Failsafe button while you are powering up your receiver, the red LED should start blinking that is indicating it’s in bind mode. You can now release the button, the frsky binding don’t have to take more than a few seconds.
Exit bind mode on the Taranis, and disconnect the power on the receiver, then power up the receiver again without pressing the bind button, the receiver should have a solid green LED that is indicating the binding was successful and the TX is communicating with RX.
3.Failing to Bind RX to TX?
If you cannot complete the frsky binding between the RX to TX after several attempts, here are the most commons causes:
receiver and transmitter module might have mist-matched firmware, EU-LBT and international firmware. If you know which firmware you have on the Taranis, you just only have to flash your rx to the correct firmware and try again
You might have selected the wrong mode, D8 and D16
Bind button is damaged on the receiver, for this problem you have to solder both pads on the binding button.
4.Configuring Receiver in Flight Controller.
For the X-series receivers, the two receivers protocols for frsky binding are SBUS and FPort, the setup is slightly different.
FPort has the advantages over SBUS, as it only uses one wire for the control link and the telemetry link. It’s combining the SBUS and Smartport into one single wire. The downside is that you have to specially flash your receiver firmware in order to using FPort. If you want to avoid the firmware flashing, you just only have to use SBUS and Smartport. They are identical in terms of performance in flights.
5.Setup Failsafe.
Once the receiver complete the frsky binding to the radio successfully, don’t forget to setup the failsafe mode that is situated on the internal receiver page and set it to “no pulses”.
