We have already seen an article where we have discussed Taranis FrSky QX7 vs X9D and saw which one would be more apt for your use case. With FrSky X9D Special Edition on the market as well, we should probably do a comparison for both of them as well - just to make things clear(er).
So, in this article, we will see which one, Frsky Taranis QX7 or the FrSky X9D Special Edition is the better choice for you. Let us dig right in and see whether the X9D Special Edition from FrSky is worth the money compared to our beloved QX7.
Reasons to get the QX7 and the X9D Special Edition
Reasons to get the Taranis FrSky QX7
● The functionality similar to X9D Special Edition including OpenTX fork
● Much better buttons than the X9D Special Edition
● Slightly more ergonomic design with rubber grips at the back (overall QX7 is the same size as the X9D Special Edition)
● Available in black or white as standard
● No annoying buzzer sound as seen on FrSky X9D Special Edition
● Internal XJT module is the same as the X9D Special Edition and hence provides a similar range.
Offering you with all the features you would possibly require to fly a mini or micro drone (or even the bigger ones) including places, the Taranis FrSky QX7 does make it one of the most affordable, best value for money radio that made it one of the best-selling transmitters on the market.
The main knob wheel for the select and navigation would be one of my favourite implementations for navigation through menus and other pages of the transmitter and is much easier than the X9D Special Editions hard buttons. There is a bit of “skipping” when you turn the dial too quickly but that is usually okay.
The standard Taranis FrSky QX7 cost around 100$ while the upgraded version - QX7S which has the hall-effect gimbals, charging port and a few more extras along with a carry case cost you almost 160$ which comes close to the X9D pricing territory. So you might want to think twice before getting that one.
You can get the Taranis FrSky QX7 from HorusRC directly.
Reasons to get the Taranis FrSky X9D Special Edition
Comes in a Carbon Fibre coloured shell case
Haptic Vibration Feedback System
Removable 5dBi antenna (RP-SMA connector)
Dual Backlight Colours (Blue & White)
16 channels with internal XJT module with ACCST firmware
64 mixers, 9 flight modes
16 custom curves with 3-17 points each, 32 logic switches
60 Model memory which is expandable with the SD card (comes with 1GB SD card)
Audio Speech outputs
USB and SD card slot for unlimited memory, and firmware upgrades, sound editing.
Traditional JR Style module bay for external RF modules
The X9D Special Edition comes with an internal NiMH 200mAh battery with an internal charging circuit.
Another great point with the X9D Special Edition is that it does not require additional mods or changes in order to work with 3rd party modules such as the Team Black Sheep CrossFire JR Module. The QX7 requires an intricate mod to make it work with the crossfire system. This is not the case for the R9M module though, it works with all FrSky radios without any modification.
The X9D Special Edition comes with a bigger, brighter and a better display with higher pixel count than the QX7 which is quite useful as you can easily see all the options in the display without being too congested but the switches are not as great to use as much as the circular jog wheel on the QX7.
An OpenTX pre-loaded SD card with audio files is provided with the X9D Special Edition for free which is quite useful as with the QX7, you will need to add your own SD card in case you require the voice prompts.
Conclusion - Which one should I go for Taranis FrSky QX7 or the X9D Special Edition?
Both these radios are one of the best in their own segments and you can’t go wrong with either of them as it has been tested for years by the community.
The QX7 is cheaper and does almost all of the things done by the X9D Special Edition does as well but at a lower and more affordable price point.
The ergonomics is totally personal and I feel the QX7 has better ergonomics partly due to the rubber grip on the back.
If there are any features like the extra sliders and switches that you really require for your builds, go for the X9D Special Edition else, if you are going to use this mainly for mini or micro (or even bigger ones) quads and have a lower budget, go for the QX7.
