A lesson plan is a document that serves as the blueprint for any class you teach. It should clearly outline your goals, objectives and methods of implementation, including any resources or materials needed.
Before you start ESL lesson planning, it's important to consider what type of lessons you want to teach your students. Are they abstract or practical? Do they focus on vocabulary or grammar? The answers to these questions may help direct how detailed your lesson plan should be when planning out how your lessons will be structured and what materials will be used during them. Keep reading to discover some tips that will help you build engaging ESL lesson plans.
Have a Specific Goal Outlined:
You should be able to clearly and concisely state the goal of your lesson plan. That doesn't mean that you need to write something along the lines of "Students will be able to write a complex, engaging essay about an aspect of their lives in order to better relate with their peers." Instead, you should have something much more specific in mind. For example:
-In this lesson, students will learn how to use hyperlinks within their written work and appropriately cite sources they used while researching those hyperlinks.
-By the end of class (60 minutes), all students will have completed assignments A-E using only materials provided by me or my TA at today's ESL class meeting.
Include Engaging Visuals and Hands-On Activities in Each Lesson
Visuals are important to engage students and help them remember what they have learned. They should be colourful, simple, and interactive. Some examples include:
-Flashcards with illustrations on one side that the student will use to answer questions on the other side
-A poster that illustrates a topic using visual elements (this can also be created using PowerPoint)
-A board game that helps teach vocabulary and grammar skills
Create Rewards for Students Who Meet the Goal of Your Lesson Plan
Rewards are a great way to encourage students and reward them for meeting the goals in your lesson plan. You can create rewards that are privileges, prizes, stickers, or certificates. Rewards should be meaningful to each student and something they will work hard for. For example, you may wish to give your class two minutes of free time as a reward for completing an activity on time.
These are just a few of the tips we have to help you create a successful lesson plan for teachers. We know that it can be tough, but we also know that it's worth it! The best thing about this job is seeing your students learn and grow every day—and being able to share in their achievements.
