Curricular Practical Training, or CPT, is an integral part of the F-1 visa program for international students in the US. It allows them to engage in practical training directly related to their major area of study. Full-time CPT rules can be complex and nuanced, so it's crucial to understand them to maintain your visa status. Below is a comprehensive guide on all the full-time CPT rules you need to know:
Full-time CPTvs. part-time CPT
Full-time CPT allows you to work more than 20 hours per week, whilepart-time CPT is the employment of 20 hours or less per week. If you enrolled in day 1 cpt universities and particular programs would allow you to work full time using full-time cpt as soon as the school start date, this is because work experience or internships are an integral part of the program.
Be aware that if you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you will not be eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Both CPT and OPT allow students to gain experience in their field of study. CPT is done before the completion of your degree, while OPT can be done either before (pre-completion OPT) or after (post-completion OPT) you complete your degree. Remember that 12 or more months of full-time CPT disqualifies you from OPT.
Enrollment requirement
Before you can apply for CPT, you must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one academic year (or nine months) unless your program requires immediate participation in CPT. Graduate students in programs that require immediate CPT may apply without having completed the one academic year requirement.
Course connection
CPT must be integral to your major, and the experience must be part of your program of study. You cannot engage in CPT after you've completed your degree requirements.
Job offer
You need to have received a job offer and an offer letter at the time of submitting the CPT application. The job offer needs to be in your field of study and be a part of your program's curriculum.
Authorization
CPT requires prior authorization from your school’s international student office and the USCIS. You must receive approval before starting any work. Working without authorization is a violation of your F1 status.
Multiple CPTs
It's possible to have more than one CPT at the same time, but each one must meet the requirements and be authorized.
Reporting requirements
Students on CPT must immediately report any changes in their employment situation—such as changes in employer, hours, or job duties—to their designated school official.
Remember that maintaining your F1 visa status is your responsibility. Always check with your school's international student office if you have any questions about CPT or your visa status.
