How do you maintain your skin for climbing?

It is entirely a complicated matter of discussion because everyone's skin is different from each other. The primary thing that comes to our mind is the type of skin and the condition of the weather. These two things are complementary to each other. If a person is climbing in a bad condition, he will have worse skin. Different types of skin respond differently after climbing a long stony path of the mountain because the resilience of the skin differs from each other.

  1. Conditions

The prime thing to maintain your skin while climbing is to understand the weather condition. You need to avoid humidity for sure. Humidity means a high amount of moisture in the air which also makes the boulders wet. Therefore, you will see your fingertips get sweaty due to excess moisturization. General temperature is appropriate for climbing, even though some areas are very dry because of their geographical location where you sweat less than you expect.

Alternatively, you can opt for cold and windy conditions, which also cause reduced humidity.

  1. Taking Rest is also good for your skin

The next step you can do is to let your skin breathe. Don't work too much on your skin.

Generally, climbers' skin gets warmer and prone to tear with each bouldering session and helps your hands to accustomed to the climbing activities. Therefore, you must give your hands some time to heal, breathe, and cool back down. It will help your hand skin to rejuvenate.

You need to build self-awareness gradually and understand how your skin behaves with time. This is essential to learn because every climber's skin reacts differently and they may notice some days they need more rest than other days.

  1. Flappers

Flappers are basically callus on the pad which becomes too dense compared to the skin of the other sides of the finger. It is a common consequence of rock climbing and bouldering. Now you must have ideas about what to do with the wrecked finger.

First Up; The famous flapper. It is a very known result of doing dyno many times. Some climbers also develop flappers due to incorrect movements and hold. Big holds are the territory of Flappers.

  1. Frayed Skin

Any tear on the skin makes that point weaker, and it will become prone to further tearing. It is going to increase the probability of wrecking the skin but tearing happens while climbing making further deeper friction.

To keep your skin protected from further tearing, just get yourself a nice skin filing with a pumice stone or sandpaper. Try to file away frayed skin to get your hand skin uniform again.

  1. Split tips

A split-tip is the climber’s nightmare so far. Splits are the basic consequence of using a particular type of hold or shape of boulder repeatedly. They will recover within 3-4 days. If you have split tips, then you must avoid that particular shape of boulder for at least a week to heal the split tips entirely.

  1. Plain old worn skin

Worn skin gets easily healed by deep moisturization. For that, you need to search for the most appropriate skin. However, in a few cases, moisturization may not work because it makes their skin softer, and become prone to split tips, flappers, & frayed skin.

Methylated spirit can be a good option because it will absorb the excess oil of hands and makes your skin dry, and hard. However, don't overuse it as oils are an important component to speed up the healing process.

As a rock climber or boulder, you need to take care of your grip strength along with your hand skin. To maintain good grip health, you can do a grip-strengthening exercise with a hand grip strengthener ball.
