A boat cruise is a fun way to experience the holidays, but while on these holidays, certain mistakes can be of great risk to the charterer. Below are some of the mistakes and how you can either avoid or resolve them
1) Holding onto a sail well above its wind range
This is a very common error for boat charters, especially when on a catamaran. The boat users become so carried away with the boat's stability that they ignore the increasing wind strength, thereby leaving the full sail up longer than necessary. Every boat charter is given instructions on the wind range to reef the main and reduce the headsail. It is wise to heed those instructions.
2) Loss of personal items
This occurs either by theft or the items fall overboard. For the latter reason, it is very common to lose things due to the occurring winds that blow things away. One solution is to hold onto those items tightly or bring a spare. As for theft, this is not too common because most boat chartering communities consist of honest people, but likewise, you cannot vouch for everybody. As a solution to this, keep your valuables safe.
3) Raising and rolling sails
When rolling the sails, take your time ensuring that the reeling and halyard retrieval line runs free and the stack pack sail bag does not hinder the sail’s release.
4) Excessive use of the power winches
Not all crew members are familiar with power winches. This is because it is only found on larger charter boats; thus, the ignorance on how to use it results in torn sails, fittings being ripped from the deck, and injury. To avoid this, when using the power winch, have someone check that all lines are released and clear to run, and another person monitors the winch’s progress.
5) Fouling the Propeller
From time to time, have someone check if anything has fouled the Propeller of the charter boat and also avoid obstructions that can foul the Propeller. Things that can foul the Propeller include slack dinghy painter, fishing nets, or flotsam.
6) Driving the outboard motor onto the beach
This is common when driving the boat in shallow water and occurs while trying to bring the boat onto the shore. It is advised to tread with caution while doing so to avoid shearing the propeller’s pin on your outboard, as this is responsible for the freedom enjoyed while exploring the coves.
7) Leaving the dinghy unsecured
After a hectic day ashore, securing the dinghy is a habit that easily escapes one’s mind. Develop a routine where the last person off the boat is responsible for securing the dinghy in place. This way, it will not escape the mind.
8) Running Batteries too low
This mistake easily happens due to the demand for battery use on modern boats. The boat’s batteries are used to power the winch, charge phones and systems, and power refrigerators. As a solution, check the boat’s amp meter, ensuring the boat stays at least 60% charged at all times.
Conclusion
Sometimes the excitement of being out on a boat cruise can lead to some of these mistakes happening. But on the chance of any of these mistakes happening, do not panic. In addition to the 8 mistakes listed above, it's also a good idea to pack necessary health and safety supplies when going on a boating holiday. Follow the instructions in this article, and you will be able to resolve or avoid them completely.
