How to Choose Billboard Locations: More Than Just a Busy Road

by Alastair Noble on Dec 18, 2025 Advertising 83 Views

Picking the right billboard site isn’t as simple as “lots of cars, big sign, job done”. The best locations are chosen with a clear head, not just a glossy photo in a proposal. Traffic flow, dwell time, viewing angle and speed zones all work together – get them wrong and even a beautiful creative will barely register.

If you’re planning to advertise on billboard panels for the first time, it helps to look at a site like your customers would: in motion, often distracted, and not actively looking for your brand.

Traffic Flow: Who’s Actually Passing By

Start with the basics – who is on that road, and when? Heavy commuter traffic can be great for everyday brands, but if your ideal customer is tradies, parents on school runs or people heading to a particular retail precinct, you want routes they actually use.

Morning and afternoon peaks can feel attractive, but think about direction as well. A panel that faces traffic heading towards the CBD may reach a very different audience to one facing traffic heading home. Good billboard planning listens to these patterns instead of just chasing the biggest number on a traffic report.

Dwell Time: Do People Have a Moment to Read

Dwell time is simply how long someone can see your message. A modest road with a long queue at the lights can beat a huge freeway site where everyone is doing 90 and focused on changing lanes.

Long, slow approaches to intersections, roundabouts and motorway entries are often gold for billboard advertising. Drivers have a little breathing room, and your message has a few extra seconds to land. That’s the difference between “blurred logo” and “I know who to call when I need that”.

Viewing Angle: Can They See It Clearly

Plenty of “premium” sites look brilliant in the sales photo but disappointing from the driver’s seat. If the panel is side-on, half hidden by trees, or only properly visible once you’re almost underneath it, you’re paying for potential, not performance.

You want a clean, front-on view as cars approach, with no poles or street furniture cutting through your key message. Pedestrian routes matter too – if people are walking past the base of the sign, a secondary message or directional line can still work hard at ground level.

Speed Zones: Match the Message to the Pace

Speed limits change what you can realistically say. In a 40 or 50 km/h zone, you can get away with a short headline, a visual and a clear call to action. Once speeds jump to 80 or 100, you’re down to a few bold words and a strong logo.

Think about school zones, shopping strips and service roads where traffic naturally slows. Those pockets let you be a bit more playful or informative, while high-speed stretches call for bold, simple ideas that can be read in a heartbeat.

Value for Money: Comparing What You Pay and What You Get

Not all big-price sites are bad, and not all cheap boards are good. The real question is whether the location can realistically deliver the awareness or response you’re hoping for. When you compare the billboard advertising rates Sydney with similar options in other areas or formats, you start to see which sites give you solid, repeat exposure and which are just expensive bragging rights.

Takeaway

A strong billboard location is one where real customer pass regularly, have enough time to notice you, and can see the creative clearly. If you keep those simple tests in mind, you’re far more likely to choose panels that quietly earn their keep, month after month.
