Acetone was first produced by the distillation of lead(II) acetate in 1606 by Andreas Libavius.
In 1832, the French chemist Jean-Baptiste Dumas and the German chemist Justus von Liebig determined the empirical formula for acetone. In 1833, French chemists Antoine Bussy and Michel Chevreul decided to name acetone (i.e., acetic acid) by adding the suffix -one to the stem of the corresponding acid, just as a similarly prepared product that was subsequently confused with margarine was named margarine. In 1852, British chemist Alexander William Williamson realized that acetone was methylacetyl; the following year, French chemist Charles Frédéric Gerhardt agreed this point of view. In 1865, German chemist August Kekulé published the modern structural formula for acetone. Johann Joseph Loschmidt proposed the structure of acetone in 1861, but his privately published pamphlets received little attention. During World War I, Chaim Weizmann developed a process for the industrial production of acetone (Weizmann process).
Production o of acetone formula
In 2010, the global acetone production capacity was estimated at 6.7 million tons per year. The United States has the highest production capacity at 1.56 million tons per year, followed by Taiwan and China. The largest producer of acetone is INEOS Phenol, with 17% of global capacity, and Mitsui, Sunoco and Shell also had considerable capacity (7–8%) in 2010. INEOS Phenol also has the world's largest production site (420,000 tons/year) in Beveren (Belgium). In the summer of 2011, the spot price of acetone in the United States was US$1100-1250/ton.
