Near Field Communication or NFC technology allows the transfer of data between two devices placed close to each other. You can experience NFC technology by using programmable NFC tags integrated into stickers or wristbands. These programmable NFC tags can send data to other NFC phones. But more than conveniently sending pictures and videos to your friends and family, programmable NFC tags also allow you to store information that automatically displays on your phone once you tap your tag. Examples can be your hotel keycard information and credit or debit card details when traveling. You can also program it to play music on your car when driving, open your favorite app, send a text message, or open a document you often use.
This technology has been existing for years now. If you are one of the people who has not enabled NFC on your phone yet, here’s how to do so.
How to program NFC tags with an iPhone
Firstly, turn the NFC setting on by enabling it on your phone’s settings page. Next, install an NFC app where you can code and set the tag to do whatever you want it to do when it touches or is close enough to your phone.
For iPhones, apps such as NFC TagInfo by NXP and NFC Ideas are available on iTunes. These apps are free and function the same way.
To program or write a custom action for your programmable NFC tag, follow these instructions:
- Open the NFC Tool on your phone.
- Tap “write.”
- Tap “add a record.”
- Several options will appear. You can either set it to open a URL, send a text or open a file.
- Enter the URL, text, or file that you want to open.
- Tap “ok.”
This time, you can try your programmable NFC tag and see that command take effect. It can now automatically open a URL, send a text message, or open a file once to tap or put your phone close enough to the NFC tag.
If you’re using an Android phone, don’t worry. There are many NFC apps that you can download at no cost from the Google Play store.
