Understanding Thyroid Diseases
Thyroid disease is a group of medical condition affecting the thyroid gland's function, one of the most common endocrine disorders globally. The thyroid gland produces and secretes thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) into the bloodstream, which regulates essential body functions like metabolism, growth, and development. Any imbalance in thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion can result in a state known as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. The leading cause of thyroid diseases is chronic autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto's and Graves' disease.
Hyperthyroidism is a condition resulting from the overproduction of T3 and T4 hormones into the bloodstream (thyrotoxicosis) by an over active thyroid gland. It is typically caused by conditions like Grave's disease, toxic multinodular goitre, and toxic adenomas. On the other hand, hypothyroidism is a condition resulting from an underactive thyroid gland that cannot produce sufficient thyroid hormones ie, T3 and T4. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is the autoimmune condition called Hashimoto's disease. Other causes of hypothyroidism include thyroidectomy, radiation therapy, and certain medications. Females are more commonly affected by both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism than males.
Signs and symptoms of Thyroid Diseases:
To diagnose thyroid disease, it's essential to be aware of its various associated symptoms. The signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are different and are listed below:
● Hyperthyroidism: People with hyperthyroidism may experience unintentional weight loss, anxiety, irritability, nervousness, trouble sleeping, scanty or irregular menstrual periods in women, goitre (enlarged thyroid gland), heat sensitivity, blurred vision, and proximal muscle weakness.
● Hypothyroidism: Individuals with hypothyroidism may experience excessive weight gain, brittle hair, dry skin, cold intolerance, fatigue, frequent or heavy menstrual periods in women, muscle cramps, myalgia, and growth and mental retardation in children. It is essential to be aware of these symptoms and consult with a healthcare provider if any of them are experienced.
Treatment for Thyroid Diseases:
This article discusses the various treatment options available for thyroid diseases, which are chronic endocrine illnesses. Lifelong medication is necessary to restore and maintain normal thyroid function. The treatment options for hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease include antithyroid medications such as methimazole, radioactive iodine, and propylthiouracil. These medications help to prevent thyroid hormone over-synthesis and restore normal thyroid function. In severe cases, surgical removal of the over active thyroid gland may be necessary to prevent further complications. For hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's disease, thyroid hormone replacement therapy is the recommended treatment. Levothyroxine is a hormone replacement medication that restores hormone concentration in tissues and is the primary treatment for thyroid hormone deficiency and related complications such as myxedema coma. It is important to note that treatment may be needed to be adjusted over time, and regular monitoring of thyroid hormone levels is necessary to ensure optimal treatment outcomes.
