What is Syphilis?

Nontreponemal serological tests, such as VDRL and RPR test for biomarkers released during treponemal infection. Comparatively, treponemal tests like FTA-ABS, TP-PA, and various EIAs detect anti-treponema antibodies, such as IgG, IgM, and to a lesser degree IgA, which are specific for syphilis infection.

Is There Any Treatment for Syphilis Disease?

Syphilis infection can be treated and cured permanently. However, early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment are the mainstays in combating the disease and preventing further damage. Usually, a single-dose intramuscular benzathine penicillin G and parenteral penicillin G, procaine penicillin G, and aqueous crystalline penicillin G are administered to treat syphilis effectively. The antibiotic azithromycin is used in cases of penicillin allergy. In 2018, a US study found that 80% of syphilis bacteria are already resistant to this antibiotic, which is why research into novel, effective antibiotics is crucial.
