Wheat is one of the most important major cash crops in India. It not only helps the farmers gain resources but also helps maintain the country's food security. This crop is the world's most cultivated crop. India is the 2nd largest country to produce wheat in the world.
Wheat is a Rabi crop. This means it grows mostly in cold temperatures. It mostly grows in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. However, daily, farmers in India are finding ways to increase wheat growth in India as, in recent years, things are coming in favour of increasing the yield for the whole world.
This crop takes little time as it is prepared to grow in November-December and cultivated before summer, which is April.
How to prepare your land for wheat crop
Wheat is a Rabi crop and a major cash crop in our country. It grows in a specific soil condition ranging between 6.0 to 7.0 ph level with a focus ph level of 6.4. Therefore, this crop needs special well-drained loamy soil. In addition, it requires well-irrigated hard soil with enough moisture trapped in the ground for a longer period.
This crop is certainly sensitive to water logging. Therefore, it is always preferred to have hard, dry soil with good drainage to collect moisture for longer. However, certain steps can be taken to improve wheat production for farmers.
Land preparation
For wheat crop cultivation, there are several ways which can determine you to make a strong strategy for better and improved growth and quality of wheat crop production.
Ploughing
There are 2 ways farmers can improve their wheat production. But before that, you should have your soil sample checked in the labs to determine what steps are needed to increase crop production.
Minimum tilling method
This method has been popular since it protects the soil structure, saves the soil moisture and protects you from winter kill. In this method, sowing wheat seed is done during winter over previous crop residues of alfalfa, soybean, canola etc. However, there is an exception in this method as planting over the last crop residue can be harmful as there can be a chance of disease transmission to the sowed crop easily.
Conventional tilling method
In this method, farmers will need to perform ploughing operations before the sowing season, that is, winter. Farmers could have to perform ploughing their fields almost 3 to 4 times during the summer season and planking operations right before the winter season.
Here, farmers can use several tilling implements like rotary tillage as it will provide the soil to break down a bit and be ready to capture the moisture in the ground. This operation can easily be done from farm utility tractors ranging from 40-50 hp categories like Eicher 380, Sonalika DI 50 Rx etc.
Ph management
Ph management is important for the growth of your crops, as you may know about the constituents in the soil nutrients. For this, you may take a soil sample to the labs. This way, you can plan accordingly the further strategies you may have to take for a better wheat crop yield.
Irrigation
For wheat crop cultivation, the most common method followed is flood irrigation. In this method, the water is drawn to the field through pipes and let flows into the crop field. It is the oldest method of irrigation being used by farmers. There are more efficient methods than this, but it is effective for wheat growth.
Depending on the soil, this crop needs irrigation once every 10 to 15 days. Usually, 6 to 7 water irrigation cycles are necessary to cultivate until they are ready to be harvested in 120 days.
There are stages where irrigation is needed
- During root initiation
- During leaf growth development
- During growing stage
- During flowering stage
- During ready to ripen stage
- During maturity stage
Climate conditions and sowing time
Wheat is one of the most adaptable crops in the world as it can be grown in temperatures ranging from tropical to cold regions. The preferable weather for the wheat crop is a cool and moist atmosphere for most of the year, and a dry and warm atmosphere is most suited for wheat crops. This type of condition allows the crop grain to mature and ripe nicely.
Wheat is a rabi crop, so this crop is sowed during November and December. This may be different for different regions. To reduce the chances of loss from late sowing, one should soak the seeds one night before sowing in the water.
Wheat seeds can be sown either by bare hands or seeder machines. It needs to be planted just 2-3 cm under the soil. Air seeders are preferred to get a uniform seed dispersal in the field.
Steps to improve the soil production
Crop Rotation
Crop rotation is the most basic and effective strategy for maintaining soil health and increasing productivity. Several crops are used for crop rotation for cotton cultivation. This is generally done with alfalfa, corn, vegetables or wheat.
Crop rotation is the way you can reduce the chance of low soil health and increase crop yield. Wheat is a rabi crop, and it only takes 120 days to be ready to harvest. So, the crops like cow-peas pulses, onion, ginger, groundnut and cotton in black cotton soil areas are generally raised crops, followed by wheat as a late crop in the same year.
Weeding
Weeding in wheat crops is necessary as it will prevent the product from getting the required nutrients. The major weeds that grow on the wheat farm are grassy weeds. Therefore, you must create a proper weed management system to prevent weeds from growing. Chemical herbicides can control weeds, but manual methods can also control them.
Conclusion
Wheat is the major cash crop in India. To increase the production of this crop, Farmers must follow these steps to improve their farming methods which can lead them to improve production rates with improved quality crops.
There are some methods which would need you to have some implements to carry out your operations more efficiently, for which you can go for tractors in the 50hp category. These tractors not only help with your farming precisely but also with efficiency. Moreover, the prices of this tractor, like Sonalika 50 HP, can be budget-friendly.
