Only volatile and thermally stable substances are eligible for separation by gas chromatography. Few compounds meet these requirements. Fortunately, analysts can use chemical reactions dimethylmercury to convert nonvolatile compounds into volatile, thermally stable compounds. This process is called "derivatization" (García Alonso and Encinar, 2003). Liu and Lee (1999) wrote a comprehensive review on chemical modification or derivatization of analytes in speciation analysis.
Naturally occurring volatile species are dimethylmercury (Me2Hg), dimethylselenium (Me2Se), tetramethyltin (Me4Sn), trimethylantimony (Me3Sb), trimethylbismuth (Me3Bi), methylarsine, tetraalkylated lead compounds in sewage sludge, and many other gases from municipal waste disposal sites. This list is not exhaustive. Feldman (1997) performed an interesting study of these compounds, describing an innovative method of converting non-volatile species into volatile species through derivatization techniques. Various separation schemes have been developed. The most common are cryogenic trapping with packed columns and sequential thermal desorption. The method is not very selective, but unstable compounds can be stored for a long time before analysis. This was followed by gas chromatography on packed columns, which improved separation of analytes through interaction with the column and separation based on volatility (Szpunar et al., 1996). Gas chromatography using capillary columns can greatly improve resolution. Their loading capacity is very small, which constitutes a limiting factor in their development.
The most common detectors for this type of morphogenesis are inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), in addition to inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). When using high-resolution ICP-MS as the elemental detector, isotope dilution measurements and isotope ratio modes are also possible.
