Electric vehicles have many benefits over their gasoline-powered counterparts. One of the biggest is their ability to be charged at home with an electric charging station or public EV charging station instead of being run by gas stations or car dealerships. Still, there are plenty of myths surrounding electric vehicle charging stations that can prevent you from making the switch to an electric vehicle in the first place. In this article, we’ll cover five of these myths and explain why they aren’t true!
Myth 1: EV Charging is Only for Those Who Own a Charger
False. Someone who owns a charger may have a slightly different lifestyle than those who doesn’t, but it can’t be denied that there are many electric car users who regularly utilise commercial EV charging stations. Most people who charge their EVs at public charging stations don’t own one yet, and may never decide to buy one. That said, there are home EV chargers available at reasonable rates from recognised brands. Being able to charge your EV at home is highly convenient.
Myth 2: EV Chargers are Hard to Use
The biggest fear people have when they encounter a public EV DC charging station is that they won’t be able to use it correctly. However, unlike gas pumps, electric chargers are simple to use - you plug your car in and go do something else while it charges. Unlike a gas station, an EV charging station is pretty use friendly. Even if you use it for the first time, you will get familiarised with it in no time.
Myth 3: EV Charging is Time Consuming
Granted, EV charging stations take a little longer than filling up a tank of gas, depending on your specific model. And that’s true if you’re driving something with a weak battery pack and a small generator. But if you’re looking to buy an electric car that can travel at least 200 miles on a single charge, then an hour or two is more than enough time to fully recharge. Also with fast charging car, it will only take 20 to 45 minutes for the battery to have adequate charge.
Myth 4: You Shouldn’t Charge Your EV While Raining
This is a misconception that's stuck around for years, despite having no basis in fact. Your EV can and should be charged at any time, regardless of precipitation. As long as your electric vehicle is properly grounded, it's safe to charge while it's raining.
Myth 5: EV Charging is Expensive
Electric vehicle charging can seem like a pricey endeavour, but there are various local and state programs that offer discounted charging for those who own electric vehicles. For instance, the Australian government offers incentives to those who purchase a solar panel EV charging station. Third party providers also offer discounted DC charging with a membership.
