Dengue fever is an infectious disease that spreads from one person to another by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus). Hence it is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a single positive-stranded RNA virus called Dengue virus (DENV). It exists in four serotypes, namely, DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4.

They also develop headaches, muscle pain, joint pain, pain behind the eyes, nausea, vomiting, hemorrhagic manifestations, swollen glands, leukopenia, and skin rashes.

Usually, Dengue fever is uncomplicated and self-limiting. The dengue patient recovers with symptomatic therapy, supportive care, and proper resting. However, in case of severe infection, it can lead to Dengue hemorrhagic fever. It usually affects children under the age of 15. It is a potentially fatal type of acute febrile illness, which is characterized by cutaneous and intestinal hemorrhages brought on by thrombocytopenia, haemoconcentration, hypovolemic shock, and neurologic abnormalities.
