How to obtain Human Tissue samples for research.
In modern biomedical research, studies on human tissues are a kind of norm for attaining accuracy and validity for the research outcome. Well preserved, richly characterized human tissue specimens are prerequisites for any research experiments. For decades, human tissue samples have been used as a core resource to lead discoveries in drug development and disease diagnostics. Let us understand how these tissue samples were collected for research.
Tissue samples for research are usually gathered from the deceased person during any clinical procedure for diagnosis or during a surgical procedure to treat a particular disease condition. An experienced medical practitioner or a surgeon removes the tissue after obtaining clear consent in written form from the patient or their legal representative to protect the rights and interests of the subject. After collection, a qualified pathologist carefully processes and examines the tissue samples. The findings are carefully annotated, and the tissue samples are converted to FFPE or frozen samples and stored at tissue banks or biorepositories for many years. A tissue bank is a facility where leftover tissue samples and related information are archived for research purposes after diagnosis. Researchers with an approved IRB protocol can retrieve samples from tissue banks for research.
What are FFPE samples and how are they prepared?
Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) is one of the most stable tissue or biopsy specimen preservation methods. In this technique, the removed human tissue samples are kept at least 24 hours submerged in 10% neutral buffered formalin and later dehydrated with multiple ethanol concentration levels. The tissue is then embedded in paraffin wax to form FFPE blocks to protect the tissue's proteins and cellular components. These FFPE blocks are then cut into precise sizes according to the purposes and are examined and approved by a professional histopathologist for research use. The fixed tissue sample is stored as FFPE blocks, slides, or curls for long years in tissue banks at ambient temperatures with continuous quality controls. Since FFPE preparation helps in retaining the morphology of the tissues intact and protects indigenous proteins and genetic material for decades, It is widely used in different research areas on a global scale.
Obtain richly characterized FFPE samples for research.
Banked human specimens and FFPE samples are crucial for modern biomedical research. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure the proper time availability and utilization of these valuable human specimens without wastage. But even today, most of the banked human biospecimens are not utilized properly and get wasted because of the tedious biospecimen acquisition process. Against this background, Central BioHub is all set to bring a change.
To make the biospecimen acquisition fast and compliant, Central BioHub introduced its first-ever online marketplace with 800,000+ banked samples readily available for purchase. Accelerating research on human tissue, Central BioHub unveils the largest collection of high-quality, well-characterized, pathologist-reviewed FFPE tissue samples gathered from patients across the globe. Hurry up, check out their latest inventory here to place orders: https://centralbiohub.de/blogs/every-ffpe-sample-is-unique-just-like-every-human.
