Ever get the feeling that, when you open your social apps, all the faces staring back at you are, well, gorgeous? Maybe that’s because it’s holiday season, festival season and Love Island season all at once. But even outside of that, our feeds look like a sort of eternal Hot Girl Summer. It’s now easier than ever to edit our digital avatars. Apps like FaceTune, Snapchat and TikTok offer subtle face tweaks (you know the ones: slim nose with a shiny button tip, subtle blush, pouty lips), meaning you can rework your look with a single swipe. This, of course, is nothing new. Ever since early magazine imagery and the advent of Photoshop, people have worried about what retouching images would do to us as a society. But now, if social media algorithms are aggressively pushing glossy, symmetrical faces to the front of our feeds, is there a danger of digitally overloading our brains with beauty? The phrase “beauty overstimulation” emerged ... Continue reading →

When Belal Salem visited the Bahariya Oasis for the first time, he felt he was on hallowed ground. Traveling deep into Egypt’s Western Desert to a sprawling valley dotted with guava and mango farms, Salem was retracing the steps taken more than a century earlier by German paleontologist Ernst Stromer, whose team had discovered some of the largest predatory dinosaurs ever found. The experience was overwhelming for Salem, a master’s student in vertebrate paleontology at Mansoura University in the country’s north. “I couldn’t feel my legs,” he says. Though he felt the weight of Stromer’s accomplishments, Salem was determined to make his own contribution to the field. Salem got his chance recently when he and colleagues identified a new dinosaur from Bahariya based on a distinctive single bone. It took two years for the team to free the specimen, found in 2016, from surrounding sedimentary rock and iron. Once exposed, says Salem, the fossil was ... Continue reading →

When Germany’s president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, came to Senegal last February for an economic summit, he took a break from conference rooms in the capital city of Dakar to get his hands dirty, literally, as he learned to make compressed-earth blocks from a mix of iron-rich soil, sand, water, and a bit of cement. His block-making tutorial was part of a groundbreaking event for a cultural institute promoting German-language study. The institute’s new building was designed by the distinguished Burkina Faso–born and Berlin-based architect Francis Kéré, who is renowned worldwide for his graceful structures adapted to their local climates. The building in Dakar is oriented so that nearby trees provide shade, and its thick walls—made of the type of unfired compressed-earth bricks Steinmeier tried his hand at making—insulate the interior from the hot Senegalese climate. A layer of claustras, or perforated walls, wraps around the building like a ... Continue reading →

The Tour de France is one of the hardest sporting events in the world. This year 176 cyclists have started the Tour, attempting to race for 3,328km over 21 stages to the scheduled finish in Paris on July 24. The riders will push themselves to their limits up mountains and often carry on through pain and injury. This might lead us to question why anyone would voluntarily put themselves through such an arduous event. What’s more, why do we celebrate those who suffer in this way? The first question is easier to answer. For the very best cyclists, there is the glory and honour associated with winning, alongside the financial and reputational rewards. For the rest, there is the great satisfaction that comes with competing, facing adversity, and completing the course. This is a central motivation for many cyclists, amateur as well as professional. And such thinking isn’t confined to endurance cycling. For very many of us, facing difficulty and overcoming adversity is an ... Continue reading →

This article is part of a regular monthly column from SUITCASE's Julie Alpine celebrating the joy of travel. If you spotted an unmarked button on the wall of your hotel room, would you press it? A recent trip to Greece got me thinking about the art of the unexpected in travel. In my Athens boutique bolthole, the manager, Konstantinos, explained - though no mention is usually made of it during check in - that the small, anonymous brass lion head on the wall was a device with which to delight guests. When pressed, it would trigger a surprise appearance (maximum one per stay) from a member of the room service team, bearing, "a bouquet of flowers... or maybe a bottle of champagne... condoms... a magician…" Setting aside the fact that one either needs condoms to hand or doesn't - this not being something best left to fate - I asked him how many guests pressed the button: "100 per cent", he replied, confidently. In a crowded, dog-eat-dog industry, brands ... Continue reading →
